Blooming garden, oil pastel on paper

Hi,

This is a small pastel sketch, 16x20 inches, I finished last week. I worked alla prima placing lights before darks. This is a good way to keep light colors as yellows, blues and yellow-greens bright and pure. As Sennelier ops started melting I stopped. I came back the following day to complete the drawing.

Julia, Thanks so much for explaining your alla prima process. I've been drawing every day for a year but I'm very new to this painterly media. This painting is such a beautiful rememberance of that very brief time in early spring. The patterning is so rhythmic and energetic.

That's gorgeous! Looks like you did very little blending-- I like the effect.

Hi Julia,

I love your golden daffodil field. I've seen your postings on the plein air forum as well, and they helped to persuade me to try OPs. I'm having great fun experimenting with them and I'm planning to go out with them when it stops raining and the black fly season is over.

Re: Blooming garden, oil pastel on paper

Thank you, guys,

Currently I plan to do more op sketches than before, everything is blossoming, it's so beautiful outside. Usually I do more oils than ops and share them with plein-air forum members. But I also want to share them with you. I wrote an article about op plein-air technique, but can't find it on this forum. It's possible that I will come up with some new stuff soon.

Can't wait to see your new stuff Julia. Perhaps you could alert us to your oil posts in the oil gushers chit chat section so I can see that too! I'd love to see what ever you are working on.
