German Shepherd on Canvas
Well, this was interesting! About 9"x12" on primed canvas. Forced me to be much looser and less detailed since the OP kept sliding off the surface! Was hard to build up and you can certainly still see the canvas texture. I think I like it, however. Or at least I think canvas has potential. Maybe next time I'll have a bit more patience and let it sit longer and continue to build up. I will say that this is one that looks significantly better in person-- my photo is a bit too contrasty in the mane and not contrasty enough in the forehead. The hind leg also appears to recede more in the original. You'll have to take my word for it ;-) but at least this gives you the idea.
Thanks!

Re: German Shepherd on Canvas
Despite the trouble you had, this turned out pretty good! You got the intense stare of the shepard down.
Working on canvas is different and definitely takes some time to figure out.

Re: German Shepherd on Canvas
Really great use of color here! I love the slightly out of foucs look. It is a great contrast between that and those very intense eyes.
I posted comment earlier but it seems to have dropped off the board.

Love the shiny blue on the nose, and the eyes are really great!

Re: German Shepherd on Canvas
This makes me want to give canvas another try. I found it frustrating for the same reasons you mentioned, and gave up, but you've handled it very well.

Re: German Shepherd on Canvas
Thanks guys. I'm usually very self-critical but this one really does look significantly better in person than on-screen. I'm going to go back to paper for the next couple then return to canvas. Oh, I had the last few animal portraits hanging in my house-- and got a request from some friends to paint their cat (well, her portrait!). That's exciting!

Re: German Shepherd on Canvas
Well, it's not exactly a commission ;-) I told them I would do it as a gift (I want the practice and to see the response of a 'customer' without the pressure.) But it's nice they asked. I wouldn't mind getting paid in theory-- I just wanted to start off with a trial run!
