Making Scratchboard

Hi All

I would like to make my own scrachboard, anyone have any idea how to do it, please advise.

Glen I use to do a lot of scratchboard and it is not easy to make a good quality scratch paper. The things that I have done is to put on gesso and scratch back to the white it worked OK but not as clean as real scratchboard.
Other methods I tried were real failures. I would post this question in the pen and ink forum and see if they have any success stories that they could chare. If they do please share them back here with all of us.

It's made with rabbit skin glue and somewhere in wetcanvas you will find at least one forumula for it. When you do, as Sam said, please post the link to it here.

Glen,
as Sam said it's a hassle to do. I also tried the gesso on board and found the result not very good. I buy the board here in Oz for $18 an A2 sheet....and leave the dirty work to others...lol..

Scratchboard....extremely difficult to produce a good surface. You would be much better using pre made, and I cant say enough about the quality of Ampersands Claybord Black if you are going to scratch. That is the only boards I use if that matters at all.

Hi Uncle Ken, I would if we could just go to the art shops and get it, when I ask I get the blank look, then I just turn around and walk away before I laught at them. LOL Sorry but why work at art shops if you dont know much?

So that the reason for trying to make it.

I think it's Penny's responsibility to find out how to do it the right way... what do you think Bob, Sam Glen? I mean she is our leader here and we are only helpless males in this post...lol... I'd like to see it done. I know my effort chipped and just didn't work.

Also Glen why not try the manufacturers web sites and ask them who sells you product in your area. I have found many product retailers that way.

Oh, I also forgot Bob....

Glen here is the article that talks about this topic. it was informative and came to the same conclusing it would be better to buy. However, living in a country where it is impossible to get scratchboard I know your frustration. There is some recipes on this link that might help.
