Next Generation

14" x 18" Arches 300 lb. ruff
I thought I would try another simple painting depicting a common thing we see in life but often overlook. The small tree is the next generation. Comming from the old stump this small tree symbolized to me the continuing struggle of life.
I hope you like this and if you see anything that I have missed please let me know.
All comments and suggestions accepted with grace.
Rich

When we look at a piece of art work it has to form some kind of connection to the viewer. It must evoke a memory or stir the imagination or it will fail to cause the person to return to it and examine it further. By painting some of natures hidden treasures I hope to bring the viewer back to places or times that are stored in their memories.

Wow Rich!!

I thought it was a photograph when the image first loaded.
As someone who cannot paint trees to save his life im so impressed by the wood texture of the tree stump and how you can paint such delicate looking branches. How do you do that? Is it just practice and a steady hand? I even bought an old nib pen (or dip pen) to see if I could manage it but it felt too scratchy against the paper.
Anyway, great painting.
cheers,
Neilly

Neilly the texture on the stump is easy. Give it a light wash and while it is still quite wet use a old letter opener nail file or similar pointed but not sharp object and make the marks in the strump you want to show as grain. Then go over it agian with the light wash and the color will go into the lines where you have marked the paper. You may have to do this a couple of times.
As for the fine branches on this painting I used a fine #4 brush with a sharp point. Other times I will use a pallet knife.
Hope this helps and if you have any more questions PM me and I will be glad to help.
ftb and Chugh thanks for the positive comments.

Excellant Rich! I really like the composition and the way you have handled the opposing contrasts of snow and bark. You caught it well. Jim
