Buddhist Monk WIP
I'm doing this from a photo a daughter in law took. No trace all freehand.
Used the sargent brush, but it won't work on a layer so I had to put in a color base first, using tinting brush.
Initial sketch. Looks a bit rough! but is quite accurate.
base colors:
This is ongoing

Re: Buddhist Monk WIP
Hey! this is getting good! The features of the monk are very good. I'll be waitning for more advances....
I guess your going to paint him with a 'drum' (i don't know his name) that has strings with little balls?

Kareen, thanks for that. Yes it's a prayer wheel. he whizzes it round and round, every time it completes a circuit, that is a prayer, for somebody
Kristen, thanks, yes to wherever.
(Hey did you meet him in one of YOUR reincarnations?)

Re: Buddhist Monk WIP
A bit more.
I am not keeping the background, it was just there to keep me focussed on the robe.
Having told Einion I stick to one brush, I'm finding I have to resort to my Conte brush to get some detail and highlights into his beads (not shown yet). The sargent brush is sluggish on small detail.
the color is coming out a bit dull too. Will have to sort.

Hey bare, you're doing a fine, fine job... I'm very interested to see how you treat the background. Keep up the great work!

Re: Buddhist Monk WIP
Thanks Joel. Here it is finished (?!)
He's holding in his left hand what looks like a tiny folded card with an image on it. I will have to ask my daughter in law what the significance is.
and a close up of the head

Re: Buddhist Monk WIP
Barry this is terrific! I never do a detailed sketcch either as it just seems like a waste of time since I lose my sketch when I paint over it anyway. You have captured good expression on his face also. Taking foreshortening into consideration his hands still seem a bit large in comparison to his face though.

Re: Buddhist Monk WIP
a good one barry...nicely done with nice palette. i do agree with sherry on the proportion of the hands and just a minor suggesion, his chain(thread of beads), around his neck , will throw a shadow at some distance, where its lifted from his robe (thats at quite a few places).
good work barry... .

Re: Buddhist Monk WIP
Thanks Sherry. I have the sketch on a layer, and quickly make it 100% transparent, when I have the shapes defined enough. Re the hands, they perhaps are a bit big, but he is a strong man, and I think they have done plenty of work, as well as spinning the wheel.
Thanks Waheed. I take your point I will add more shadow, especially to those going horizontal at the bottom
