one apple
I think I'm about finished with this one, but was wondering if the background should be darker. I like the apple and the composition, just not sure about the purple bg.
Help!!!!

Re: one apple
Maria, IMO i'd definitely go much darker w/the BG. it would make the apple more of the star in this piece as it should be. also, i'm partial to dark BGs. love the apple! you may want to go darker on the shadow that falls across it.

Re: one apple
I'm with Billie, Maria. This needs to be much darker. So have fun finding a good strong dark value.

Re: one apple
I love the composition.
I would go darker on the background too. You might also darkening the shadow with a little red and then cover it with green again. Experiment on scrap paper first. Try and choose a red that is as much a complement of the green you used as possible.
This is going to be lovely when it is finished.

Re: one apple
Lovely composition.
Great start, you'll be amazed to see what happens if you push the values.

Re: one apple
Great job so far I agree with the others, if it were me, I'd probably use a reddish tone in the background somewhere to really help the apple pop, maybe tuscan red or something similar? It's going to look great though

Re: one apple
The drawing is smack on but you really should add more layers of color. Only if you want more. You may want this effect. Not for me to say you did not ask for C & C other than the back ground.

Re: one apple
Thank you all for commenting on this piece. I felt that it did need a darker background, but just wasn't sure what color to use to darken it. Thanks to
Wendy for telling me to use a dark red. I had thought of using blue but then I would have lost the leaves, green was out for the same reason, and a darker purple didn't seem to be right either, black wasn't even considered.
Rosa please feel free to critique. I do learn a lot from a critique.

You've gotten good advice here, and please update when you finish the background.

Re: one apple
Here is the updated version. I used burnt umber and dark green on the background. It looks more black IRL than it does in the shot. I couldn't get the colors balance correctly on the computer.

Re: one apple
Really good start Maria. Now that the bg is darker, can you work more darks into the other elements? This could really be outstanding with just a little more work. Maybe it's just me, some other more experienced artists will probably jump in any time now. I really cant wait to see this finished.

I agree with JoAnn. You could really push those leaves and take this piece to a new level.
