Post Self-Portrait?

This was intended as a preparatory drawing for a painting to be done in a renaissance style. I don't think that I have captured the look very well... I haven't adequately translated the colors into values, and the line work doesn't seem to fit well with the blended shading.

I have also taken some liberties with my face. I've only shown this to one person so far, and she is of the opinion that it looks more like my brother than like me. Oh well, he always was the better-looking one. (Bitter? No... not really... I mean... well... um... yes.)

All opinions and advice welcome.

Sutherland - Please!! however you choose..DO the painting!!! Since you say you have "taken liberties" with your face..you are ONLY requesting advice and opinions regarding this drawing. Well, without any reservation at all, let me say you have a very noble and intelligent countenance, and it would lend itself EXTREMELY well toward a "renaissance style" Judging by your own criticism (a bit harsh in my opinion!) you seem to feel you have not conveyed enough imformation in the drawing..to allow a good development with paint? I honestly feel that your line work..works well as you have it..it already gives this a "renaissance" feel. I would guess you might want to maintain that line/blended- shading relationship as you paint..(?). Your other concern, that you have not "adequately translated the colors into values" we cannot help you to determine, without being able to make a color comparison. I do like the concern you show for the shadows on the left-side of your face. If you intend to paint upon your drawing..you would have to ask yourself if you feel you can determine good color values and placement, based on the drawing as it is.
Rockwell as you know did extremely detailed charcoal value studies prior to painting. I'm not sure how much drawing-value information YOU..need before you proceed with your paint mixing..(?). I think it would be possible to begin a successful painting based on the amount of drawing information you have here, you will make a lot of determinations of color/value by referring to your original color source. I can only say I like the drawing VERY much as it stands.
Always good to see your work.

I think it's a very good drawing and like the others would love to see it transform into a painting.

The painting is in progress - I don't have an ETA on it yet, but I am working on it - when and as life allows.

(And you knew that Arlene )

For purposes of clarification: No, this does not look like me. It was done from a photograph of myself and a portrait by Botticelli. After sketching my face I discovered that I was entirely unable to recreate the lighting from the Botticelli in real life, so I tried to map the shadows from the painting onto the sketch from the photograph. This changed the face entirely so that it is no longer "me." (And I straightend my nose and curled my hair - watcha gonna do 'bout it? )

Friends tell me that this looks like a relative of mine that they have never met. May we say (since no one actually knows) that this is a drawing of the original Sutherland G. Taylor?

Re: Self-Portrait?

Your portrait has a painterly style, so I think it will translate very nicely.
