Re: it is what it is.. i got bored and left
Sorry to hear the creeps are out there, too. That sort of thing is what the 'bridge and tunnel crowd' gets up to in Manhattan. One time a bunch of suburban NJ types decided to see the (free) Shakespeare in the Park performance. They barged into a line already formed, in which some had been standing for hours -- they just entered the middle of the line and set down their blankets there! (The line was somewhat stretched out because people were avoiding the sun in some areas.) Very yuchy people; they seem to think money is the measure of all things, and being rude is somehow cool. By the time they find out different, I fear it will be too late, for them.
Hope you get a good art agent and never have to deal with those types again. It's bad enough taking a seat someone's obviously reserved with his things, but when it's assigned seating, that's just unconscionable.

Yeah, if you have assigned seating and someone is sitting in your chair.. You have every right to tell them to move. That would be like someone sitting in your seat on a plane. I wouldn't have stood for that crap either. I'm surprised the ushers didn't make her move. Ah well, life keeps tumbling forward.

Re: it is what it is.. i got bored and left
geez . . . nearly the same thing happened to me on a photo job. I would get paid to photograph the firm's holiday party (which meant I would also not really get to enjoy the party, but a buck is a buck). I needed two electrical outlets for battery recharge and a place to work from (typically I take 300 to 400 pictures at these things), but we were running short of seating and my stuff sat there in a neat little pile until I came back to get started. Someone had taken all my equipment and put it on the floor and were eating and gabbing over the equipment at their feet. I told them I needed space at the table to take pictures and they ignored me despite my asking them several times, so I just didn't take pictures. All those dancing couples and 'special dates' and not one picture. They've made sure I had a place to set up ever since.
You gotta play your own game and trust that somewhere it evens itself out, because it will. Better for her to know she couldn't get away with that with you, than to peg you as someone she could manipulate.

Re: it is what it is.. i got bored and left
its a shame that happend james.
other than that it was a really nice event, at least over where I was sitting. all the artists at my table were wonderful and supportive of each other, and the non artists as well. there was a lot of engaging conversation.
People were throwing money around buying just about every piece of art offered, at either the actual value, or slightly over or under it's stated value. not to mention donating 50 thousand plus dollars in a "raise you paddle" frenzy, just to give.
the hosted bar and dinner were very well done/orchestrated, I never waited more than 30 seconds for a whiskey and coke . the centerpieces of the tables were four glass bowls filled with potted roses that we were asked to take home afterward. nice. the tables were set magnificently, really I could never afford to eat like that!
Even though I knew no one at my table, by the end of the night I had talked and laughed, and ate and drank up a storm, and felt very well treated indeed.
even though I cant afford to give $, I feel good my painting went to get money to education programs my own children participate in (the seattle youth symphony for one, my kid plays double bass in it )
here is a blurb from the website and a link (below it) if you want to read more.
A sold out crowd of more than 600 art collectors, art enthusiasts, and artists packed the 5th Annual PONCHO Invitational Fine Art Auction, " A Horse of a Different Color", on Saturday, March 4, and raised, a PONCHO Art Auction record, of just over $350,000 for area arts organizations and arts education programs! Please check back soon for more details.

I can't say that I blame you for reacting this way.
I still think it a great painting. Amazing what a bit of emotion can do to a work isn't it.
Unfortunately it is never easy to do these "social" functions, for the most part you find out just how self centered, egotistical and nasty people can be when given half a chance. And then the organizers will wonder why you don't care to participate in future efforts. Hello folks. The positive side is that you can now be noticed as one of those tempermental artistic types, not all that bad for the most part. There are a few folks who may not forget your name.

Re: it is what it is.. i got bored and left
James,
I don't want to offend by saying this, and I hope its taken in the right "spirit".
I doubt it will be remembered but by a couple of people (not that you and your art are not memorable, you are), who may, or may not, agree or disagree. look at all the folks here completely agreeing; the woman was out of line. I suspect most people were so wrapped up in thier conversation, own art, art they were thinking about bidding on, and plenty of other things going on in thier lives, they hardly noticed. (I mean isnt that the point of the whole story? people so absorbd with themselves, they wouldn't notice a heard of elephants trampling a small child?)
As far as being invited back, well, the thing is called, "Invitational Art Auction", but artists can invite themselves to donate work, so if you want to participate, its unlikely you will be turned away. the entire point of PONCHO is to get as much free art to sell as possible, your work sold, they will want more.
it was an unfotunate event, but no more or less than that. keep on painting and championing the arts, you are as welcome in them as anyone, seattle is not NYC (not that I know anyhting about NYC, no offense intended to new yorkers ); it's a friendly, welcoming, cool town.
