Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter Fantasy (preliminary experiments)

I'm posting something a little different here. I have a good friend in town here in Fort Collins, by the name of Sam. He draws cartoons, and has published some on his own, but they are on the market. We enjoy seeing each other's work..I lean toward oil paintings and he, toward cartoons and fantasy art. He has enjoyed working up ink and color on some of my drawings, and here you will see what resulted. (Image #1)My original drawing was done in pencil and ink, it was based on a gesture (pose) I liked in a photo. My facial features and most everything is my own..(out of my head)..Not difficult to do as long as you have the general "attitude" of the pose you like. (Image#2) A xerox copy, with a bit of my own color suggestions-in colored pencil. I'll often do this with a xerox..to establish and try out color schemes. (Image#3) Image was transported into Photoshop (I believe that is what Sam uses..), and Sam took over from there. Appears to be a little re-drawing on the part of Sam also... thought you might enjoy this sequence.

Michael-very interesting series!
It would be great to see the sketching,
inking, coloring process step-by step.
I experimenting with the same thing sometimes, it would be very helpful.
I think he made a second layer and filled it with colors, then made another one for the highlights. I like it!

Michael,
It is interesting to see this sequence of drawings. The thing I notice most is how such a lot of the detail has to be taken out during this process in order to be replaced by colour. I like the treatment given to the first drawing the best.

Rod, thanks. I think I have tried quite a few areas..just for fun. I was concerned that I spread myself too thin, and brought this up in an email to Milt. I wish I could quote him here, he made me think. To become REALLY good at something, we should really narrow our focus. My areas of focus are drawing and painting. My drawing and photography interests are primarily just support for my paintings.. Now, when Mark comes to visit, he will be wondering where all my paintings are! LOL...and uh..er...well...I NEED TO DO THEM! (a LOT MORE of them anyway!!!!)
I shared some drawings like these with Sam, just to see what he would do with them..he has gone far beyond the color version you see here. Oil painting is my PRIMARY interest.

Michael,

Have you seen the "Battle Angel Alita" graphic novel (magna) by Yukito Kishiro?

Cindy..no I have not. But I do know there are many beautifully drawn comic-book FEMALE characters...the comic series "Ghost" is/was one of them. Will note the graphic novel you mention, as well as the artist. Thank you Cindy.

BTW...are you and your husband able to attend the get-a-way planned at my nephew's resort in Estes Park..????(May 26th, 2001 through June 4th, 2001)...Would love to meet you both.
Cindy (and everyone else visiting this thread!!) please see the website below. http://www.estes-park.com/evergreens/

Cool

Michael,

I must have missed this when I was on vacation! I really love the series you depict here.

I really enjoy his play of color and the emphasis on the simple line. Also, dig her eyes! I just loved the comics as a teen and always digged the play of colors.

Thanks for sharing it with us!

Warmth,
ReNae

Michael,
I was wondering if you have ever had work as a comic book 'penciler' or 'inker'? Your style of drawing is so similar to the style commonly used in comics.

Hi sherville - No, in answer to your question, have I ever done any "penciling or inking?". I often feel I don't have a particular "style" of drawing..each theme or idea generates different responses from me. This "fantasy" theme..was just another avenue of exploration...fun, but comic art is not something I (personally) have a strong desire to do. I did show Mark Miltz some work (drawings) that appear humorous, but my intention was serious, the humor shows up as a by-product of the distortions..and I am pushing for more realism. I have been doing these drawings for quite a while..sort of "unusual" look at figures and multiple figure compositions. At his suggestion, I started my first oil on Masonite-- oil paintings based on some of these drawings (using Liquin to speed dry-time), and I'm going to push to do a series of these paintings. (Will probably post in my gallery and not at Wetcanvas, as they deal with "mature" themes)-((or immature themes, depending on your point of view!!!)). I draw..until I feel comfortable with ideas..and then go for the oil paint. Masonite is a new surface for me, and I really like it so far..holds my red and blue colored pencil drawings very nicely.
