Show Us Your Best for 2005

In this thread, we are posting the paintings (or drawings) that we feel are our best classical pieces for 2005. You can post work done in any medium, but the style must be classical. Each person has a limit of two paintings.

I'm looking forward to seeing your work!

Re: Show Us Your Best for 2005

I think that this is my favorite painting of 2005

It's my copy of Vermeer's Girl with a Red Hat".

Nickel - Your "Storm on the Sea of Galilee" is magnificent! So is your Vermeer! Wasn't the "Girl in a Red Hat" fun to do!

Margie - You did that! I'm so impressed! It's absolutely beautiful!

Re: Show Us Your Best for 2005

Wow! Guys I'm very impressed with all your entries! Hope more will follow.

@Barb
Alllready commented on this one earlier, still am impressed. I think you have the "Dutch" look pinned down in essence by combining low toned, not elaborated background with strong highlights on the figure, the main focus. Contrast is the game in imitating Dutch/Flemish painting.

@Nickel

I am struck by the sweet contrast in color of your rendering of the Sea of Galilea. The pale yellow of the sails against the dark blue of the sky. In your Vermeer copy, I like the color composition, low key set against high key. Do I see little faces in the foreground? Nice!

@saintlukesguild
Proportions are well executed in this portrait as is the chiaroscuro. Is it a self-portrait?

I can have TWO, right? Another one, copy of Waterhouse, study for Hylas and the Nymphs.

Yes Margie, it is a mirror image portrait.

Your girl is eye catching. What medium? Charcoal? Oil wash?

Barb - I love your Vermeer!

Nickel - Lovely waves there - I feel quite seasick just looking at it!

Marge - Durers hands are BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Waterhouse is fast becoming one of my favourites - lovely drawing.

SaintLukesGuild - I admire anyone who works with pastels! This is a very serious portrait well rendered.

Re: Show Us Your Best for 2005

Barb, Nickel, Luke, Anita: Thanks!

@Luke: It's digital (Wacom pentablet and Paintshop Pro). This program has a large number of brushes imitating traditional media and you can also make custom brushes. I'm not sure which ones I used for the Waterhouse, but one of them was chalk. For the Durer I made custom brushes imitating ink and inkwash.

@ Anita. Lovely shading and impressive work on the details! The vase with tulips especially!

Luke - Gorgeous color! It’s a wonderful portrait! Your a handsome fellow!

Margie - Your “study” from “Hylas and the Nymphs” is absolutely fabulous! Wonderful job!

Yup, everyone can post two. So you can post one more!

Anita - Your still life is certainly classical! The tulips are beautifully drawn! I love the way that you handled the light!

Your really did well showing the billows in the petals of the rose! Your pencil work is marvelous!

These are definitely my two favorites (posted inthe main forum). Studies of Leonardo da Vinci's sketches:

Hi JayD!

It's great that you posted your drawing here!

I love the gorgeous color and movement in it!

The artist must have been into Japanese things!

It's great to have you stop by!
