Finally finished 3, San Juan Island

HI Everybody, I haven't posted in awhile, but I do like to look at all the great work. Here are 3 pieces that I started out on location and for some reason (the cold weather) it took a while to finish. First one was done down at our port of old commercial fishing boats 16 by 22". I was paint sketching and turned around on the dock and saw all this rigging, had to paint it!. Next one is a small sheep farm on our island.Painted it over a couple of mornings, and finished up inside, 22 by 28". The third on is a quick sketch of intense sky color, clouds, tree, but what i've been working on is doing my own frames, with linen covered liner and then making the outside part and painting it in a distressed finish. Mostly this winter I've been portrait painting, looking forward to warmer weather. We are just starting to get some cherry blossoms here! Annie

Annie, I'm so glad you posted these. You've really done well at capturing the values and the subtle shades of shadow.

I thought the thumbnail of the first was a photo. That rigging is so interesting and the composition with all the lines is a treat for the eye to wander around in.

The placement of the sheep and the shadows on the hill are just perfect. You've really achieved depth and height in that one. Part of the key is the distant fields which are nicely done.

You're quick study also has nice composition.

Welcome back!

Re: Finally finished 3, San Juan Island

Thanks everyone, I'm fond of the rigging painting, 1. I like commercial fishing boats, 2. it's an unlikely subject. Sometimes I go out with an idea in mind, with the rigging I was just struck at how interesting it was. I often have an experience when I go out drawing or painting, my mind is tuned in to seeing, I start seeing paintings everywhere. That's what happened with this one.

PS My BIG plein air news is that I'm preparing for a month long painting trip in rural France. I am preparing a load of gessoed panels for the trip. I'd love to exchange any good tips you have about painting in Europe. Annie

Lovely paintings Annie.
When you get back from Europe maybe we can plan something here in WA? I'm in Port Orchard and have a few painting buddies here. An outing up that way sounds fabulous! I haven't been to the S.J. Islands as of yet but I would love to go to paint.

Dianne
