printing over top with my epson
Hi out there. Are there any products that I can coat over various materials (papers, painted canvas) that will alow me to print with my epson printer on top of an existing image?
I understand that epson paper and canvas have a coating on them to alow the ink at adhere.

This community is for fine art printmaking not reproductions. We can't help you.

Marissa is right. We're discussing hand-pulled printmaking techniques here. This topic is better suitable for the digital forum. But nevertheless I'm happy to point you to InkAID ( www.inkaid.com). Works fine.

Hi, Daveg, and welcome to Wet Canvas...
Unfortunately, as the others mentioned, this Printmaking forum is for hand-pulled prints and not digital reproductions. The Digital Art forum and quite possibly the Photography forum will probably have lots of members who would be more helpful...
I'm going to split out this thread and put it in the Digital Art forum so that you might get the help you need...

Re: printing over top with my epson
Someone here may be able to help you, but not me LOL......
I was just going to ask if the original print was on canvas or regular paper and if it was a painting or picture you did? This is sort of confusing, but I will see what they tell you.....

Re: printing over top with my epson
I know there is a product to coat paper with that enables ink jets to print on. I have no idea if that product could be put over a photograph or not.
Perhaps the computers/technology channel might be a better place to ask. I won't move this however. YOu might get lucky here.
Why do you want to do that? If you want to add something to a photo, the way to do it would be to scan it into your puter then add what you want to it, then print.

Re: printing over top with my epson
Hi daveg,
The digital-fineart list at Yahoo! Groups would be a good place to ask about this. They deal with digital art printing all the time and there are many professional artists and experts on the subject who can help, or at least let you know if it can't be done. (I doubt that it can't be done, but am far from knowledgeable enough to know for sure.)
Here's the URL:

Best wishes!

Re: printing over top with my epson
Janet, just out of curiosity do you know if it can be put on a photo without ruining the photo?

I am not 100% sure about that but I know that the precoats can be applied to any absorben and nonporous surfaces. You can print any digital image on top of traditional art. You can also use it on rice paper, watercolor papers, canvas, polyester etc, etc and print on them.
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe you have to add a layer of their adhesive first, maybe not. It would be good if you email them and ask that specific question to them. Or maybe I can try it myself since I have these InkAids precoats.
What exactly do you have in mind regarding printing on top of a photo? That would give me an idea of what you want to accomplish.

Re: printing over top with my epson
LOL Janet, I have nothing in mind other than would the product make it possible. Just curious and thought you might know since you seem to be familiar with the product. It just seemed that wetting a photo with anything is likely to ruin it but it might be handy if the product did work that way. Although, not sure what for. Just gathering knowledge for future but since I have no plans I don't think I want to know bad enough to email anyone, or ask someone to test it for me.

Re: printing over top with my epson
LOL.
I am sure the product will work on photos maybe if they are printed with pigment inks like with the Epsons which are waterproof. But if you would be printing your photos, what's the point on printing them and then over printing them again. I would just go to photoshop and do a better collage! LOL

I agree. Thats pretty much what I said in my first post.
I do know however that my photos printed on my Epson with duro bright inks don't fare to well if they get wet.
Thanks Janet

Re: printing over top with my epson
I haven't tryed DuroBrights but I have UltraChromes and they are really water proof. One day, I was doing something with 'playdoh?' and it got stuck to the printout. I found out many ours later. So I took a 'handywipe', wet it, and cleaned the image. To my surprise, the image was intact without any trace of damage.

daveg, I glad you got some answers here. I'm sorry about the frosty reception that you initially received... sometimes there is no accounting for bad manners.
