Drawing boats

Hi I am new here and have searched the site on the subject but couldn't find any threads on drawing boats. I sail and have my boat moored in a beautiful river full of boats, my problem? I find them really hard to draw, they never seem to come out right.
Any pointers would be really helpful.
Thank you in anticipation
Dave

Re: Drawing boats

Welcome!

Use the SEARCH function. It is located on the blue bar above--on the line w/My WC!, etc. Use the Advanced Search choice. Type in the word boat in the Keyword blank on the left (as viewed) side of the page. Then go to the section titled SEARCH In FORUMS, arrow down to Watercolor and click on it. Then arrow down to SEARCH NOW and click.

This should open up many threads about boats.

Good luck.

Lyn

Dave,

The possible answer is in the learning zone in this section, Boat scene my way by Rod Webb, give it a try.

Re: Drawing boats

The hardest part for me is getting the bow and the sides to look right, especially from a high-angle view. I've found it helpful to enlarge a photo of a simple rowboat and trace the various curves and angles until I get a feel for how they work together.

Re: Drawing boats

Hi dspinks
Yes I have done that with a boat that I saw as a photo in a book (it is now hanging in my sailboats saloon) not sure where to post a picture of it as I have only been a member of this forum for a day. I used the grid method to copy it. It worked well but I would like to draw them free hand.

Re: Drawing boats

Hey Dave! If you want to draw freehand, get a copy of Betty Edward's Drawing On The Right Sided Of The Brain or a similar book. The trick for me, is to draw not what I THINK I see, but what actually is before me. A boat, barn, flower, whatever is just a collection of lines, curves, etc. Her book helped me loads. I'm sure others have thoughts on this as well... Good luck!

Re: Drawing boats

Good morning Strider
I have actually got Drawing On The Right Sided Of The Brain but could not get on with it, perhaps I should dig it out and try again.
Thanks for the link Laudesan.
I like the figure of eight explanation. I will look at it in more detail later
