Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

Hi everybody!

Sher has asked about Wearable Arts tutorials. There are links to some tutorials in the Jewelry and Fiber Arts links thread, and I will try to update that list asap.

But there probably is more potential for tutorials, and I'm sure we can get some more together - if we know what you'd be interested in.

So, we're open for suggestions - what would you like to learn more about?

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

oh all kinds of things! It would be cool if Barbara/Penguintrax? would do a tutorial on that amazing poly clay cane!

I would love some PMC tutorials or WIPS

How to knit socks? or hats or felt things?

How to make jewelry using stained glass techniques?

How to enamel?

Oh all kinds of things. I'm trying to think what I could possibly show you guys that I know how to do, that you don't already know... can't think what it might be...

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

Hi,
I would also love to learn some basic silversmithing things, stamping (ala Danielle), oxidizing, handmade clasps, different ways of connecting beads (figure 8's, curlycues), bails, design techniques, how to use colors together.
I'm trying to take my stuff up a level and get away from just stringing, but I'd like to have the bracelets and necklaces still be comfortable to wear.
My biggest learning problem is when I finally sit at my desk, every idea I had thought about all day just falls out of my head and I sit there overwhelmed, any tutorials for that???
Love the tutorial idea!!

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

Hi
I could do with a tutorial on how to write tutorials, and no I'm not being facetious. I've learned how to do things in a workshop situation where it's all practical and not written down, actually writing it so anyone can follow would be hard for me.
I could probably write a tutorial on enamelling, although it is a huge subject so it would have to be tackled in different stages. And basic silversmithing, but much of it is very basic, like piercing, soldering and polishing.
I don't know much about beadwork, so a simple tutorial on things like finishing wire ends and strings would be interesting.
Design and creativity is a really hard one, I think we've all sat there and thought "blank". My usual way round it is to shove down as much eye candy as I can find, in any discipline, and wait for mental images to come. Maybe rather than a tutorial we should have a sort of "how I do it" thread on that one.

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

We've just updated the list of tutorials and how to's in the Jewelry & Fiber Art Links. The list is not complete yet - there's a wealth of information in our forum, and so far I only managed to go backwards through the last 30 pages... But maybe something of what you're looking for is already there, so - check it out!

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

I'd like to learn how Jodie makes those beautiful seedbead bracelets with the flowers and beads sitting on top of them. I also wouldn't mind seeing a spiny knot/shag carpet bracelet tutorial. I know there are some out there on the web. But the ones I have tried so far I didn't feel comfortable that they would hold together
I think Andee should post the bezel tutorial she sent me that one time - it's fantastic!

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

My two cents..

I'd love to see some metal-working tutorials, soldering, smithing... hammering lol. I primarily do maille and wire-work, I guess, so more advanced wire skills would be great to learn.

Pam mentioned knit stuff, I don't know how well it qualifies, I can crochet.. and I have a hat pattern for just a basic hat. I can also do a ripple pattern, lol. I would volunteer for crochet if anybody wants to learn that. I could also do a maille one, I suppose, but I doubt I'm the right person to do that.

Also.. I think it's a good idea to have some tutorials on this forum, instead of just links. Not only because they're easier for us to find and relate to (ie, we know the people we're learning from and can ask questions when we have problems, etc), but because they could draw traffic to the forum; we'd have a whole new group of designers to mingle with and fawn over their work--not that the current ones aren't fabulous.. but the more the merrier, as they say. If we had enough tutorials, we could even expand to a site of our own! I can see the possibilities now.. *eyes glaze over*

Good tutorials might also be basic design tutorials, and designer signature tutorials, if anybody would want to do that--taking something that is special to their designing and sharing it. (someone mentioned stamping a la Danielle, for example.) Nothing too extensive, as nobody wants a million pieces floating around just like theirs.. but.. you guys know what I mean. I am tired and long-winded today, and not explaining myself well.

I would like to see some tutorials on drilling sheet metal and riveting, ie. cold connections. That would be super! Oh, and how to work with PMC and a butane torch, like the type from the hardware store.

All-righty-then! It looks like I opened Pandora's box.
I love all the creative juices that are flowing...everyone has great wish lists and I would love to learn most of what everyone has mentioned. I would like to see polymer clay beads made, All the basic bead weaving stitches covered, metal & wire working, glass bead making, Knitting, crochet, cro-tat, lace making, quilted clothing, wire crochet, bead crochet, and many more....bring it on! I love learning new things (it will expand all our horizons).

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

I would love tutorials! For me, I'm interested in any metal work. Living in rural Ohio.. it's a good hour's drive to any available classes. So it's books, the net and lots of trial and error for me.

Re: Tutorials - what techniques would you like to learn?

One other suggestion, when the tutorials are listed can they be arranged in sections so the metal work basics are together, the bead stringing techniques together, the stone setting methods together etc. And where the tutorials are outside links can this be marked. Oh and can we comment on the tutorials too, asking questions or giving alternatives and clarification?

Claire - I'm already working on sorting them in sections (have finished it last night, but I want to add more to them before I upload the whole list)! And I'm going to mark non-WC-links as well. As for the comments - I think it would be best to comment in the thread where the tutorial is, not where they all are listed. Or what did you mean?
