Building a pochade box W.I.P.

I'm building a pochade box for someone and thought maybe a good thing
to place the pictures of progression also here, so here we go:

It's going to be a box with vertical support. used for canvas and panel,
I use the idea from the french easel to use both.

The cover is not yet made but the whole support will go behind it.
Notice the "nails" to support Canvas and panels as well. There going
to be 3 slots into the cover two for the "nails" and one for the bolt to fasten
it.

The box at it maximum height (approx 18")

So far for now, more wil follow .....

This is great Rene. I'm looking forward to your next post. I'm thinking of building my one for myself while awaiting warmer weather.

The nice thing about making your own stuff is that you don't have to settle for compromises. And it's fun, and usually much cheaper. Will be looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Re: Building a pochade box W.I.P.

So the second day's progression:

The cover is not yet finished i think i'm gone change
the wooden strip into a brass one. The palette is a
Aluminium one, you can take it out to clean or
change.

Here a view of the underside, you can see the
detachment of the palette, the connection to a
tripod is not yet made.

Here one of the backside, im not sure what to do a
spring loaded clam ( the "nails") or with a wing nut.
Not yet finished though.

A view of the canvas/panel support. This strip of
wood is going to be of brass (i think)

and one of the box closed, notice that the "nail" is
holding the box closed. Finished it wil done by the
upper support clamping over a piece of wood.

So that's it for now, more wil follow.

Re: Building a pochade box W.I.P.

I've got some new pictures, ....... it's finally mounted on a tripod!!

i change the wooden strip for a brass one, this wil give the "nails"
more space when the box is closed.

you see that the upper support clams the box neat and tidy (lucky me.)

Im not completely satisfied with the spring loaded clams "nails" but in essence
this would be it.

so that's it for today, more wil follow.

Re: Building a pochade box W.I.P.

Thanks, Valerie, Dan, Dianne, Donald and Lorij.

so now some new pictures:

the box with the two brushtray's one you could
replace for a palette nap,
( I've to make that one though)

A detailed picture of the cover holder.
some people say that wing nuts are a crime
but my experience is that when oiled with
linseed it becomes a little sticky and never loosed one (yet)

An other over all look. Notice that the panel is somewhat different secured than a canvas would be.
The panel size of this work is 10"x12"

A look from behind, I'm not satisfied yet with the way of the spring loaded panel/canvas holder.
thinking about it though.

the box closed, you see that the brush trays are clammed. Also why I'm not satisfied with the panel/canvas holder. The wing nuts are sticking to much outside the box!!

and a look of the other side, here you can see the hole of the tripod mounting bolt. Also the wing nuts who are holding the brush tray's or palette nap.

For so far, ..... a little more wil follow.

Re: Building a pochade box W.I.P.

Now i'm ready with it!

I oiled the whole thing, with a solution of
linseed oil and turpentine. It's prevent that the easel
becomes dirty and it becoming more water resistant.

I made some final pictures of it.

The final result, with palette nap on the left
and brush washer hanging on the right.

A pictures with a stretched canvas on it.
(size 10 x 12.)

The final result of the panel/canvas support, two turn able hooks,
who can be tightened by those wing nuts.

A close up from the palette nap and his mounting.

Same but then from the brush tray.

And a detailed picture of the canvas/panel support.

Bey for now.
It has been fun to build!

Ready to send!
