Deer WIP

Well I decided to do this buck picture. I thought I could do it easily enough but this thing has been bucking me from the start.
I started out simple enough. 4" x 5" drawing on Smooth Bristol
1. Watercolor grass on the bottom

2. Airbrush some shadows over the top of this

3. Come back over the airbrush with some acrylic to start building up the grass again.

4. Fiddle with the background a little more and start laying in a watercolor base for buck.

5. Finish watercolor base nothing great just starting to put in basic direction of the fur and general form.

6. Decide you now hate the background and airbrush over all the previous work to get a new base to work on, allowing a little (very little) of the previous work to show through

7. Decide it is still too dark and airbrush more over the background.

8. Decide to stop boring your friends with the in-between steps and work on making the grass look like grass. A lot of back and forth going on here between airbrush and regular brush trying to get a better feel for the grass. I have to say I am still not 100% happy but now I am going to work a little on the deer and come back to the grass later.

Re: Deer WIP

This is great Sam!! I appreciate the tutorial too, the airbrush/hairy brush process is still a bit of a mystery to me. The browns you used to airbrush over were perfect for that. I also appreciate you letting us tag along with the rough bumps of your painting, it helps us to know how you fix things (although the original grass looked just great to me too!). Can't wait to see more progress on the buck!

wow, this is great , thanks for showing all your stages, especially the ones you didn't like, now I know I'm not the only one that has a few false starts with every painting!

Re: Deer WIP

This is great. It's really interesting. I recently bought an airbrush but it's still sitting in its box. When you changed your background did you just spray around the deer or did you mask it?

Re: Deer WIP

Thanks all for the nice comments. I will work more on this tonight and hopefully finish so that I can do some others that are waiting inthe wings.

Kathy why not break out that brush I am sure you will do well. If you need some help or tips come and join us in the airbrush forum there are always people there that want to help get someone excited about airbrushing.
To answer your question yes I masked off the deer with frisket paper. You can see the paper in the second photo. I took it off after that when scanning.

Re: Deer WIP

Thanks Sam. This is one of the most fun posts I 've seen in a long time. It's so REAL, so TRUE to life, so YES, I do that sometimes too!!! Heehee. Looking good tho. Think maybe you're being too hard on yourself, but then we can't see what you can "see" in your mind. Keep it up and thanks for the real life "drama"

Re: Deer WIP

I am not sure but for some reason this one was giving me fits. I think I am going to call it quits on this one and move onto something else now. Thanks for looking.
Sorry not a lot of progress shots there was too much, I hate the way this looks to scan it stages, going on.
1. I started laying in transparent color over the base watercolor and did a little work on the antlers as well.

2. The piece as it stands right now. As I said I think I am going to move on to a another piece but I will take comments and criticism if you wish.
