Springer in Watercolour

I have nearly finished the dog, and then just the background to go. Probably the hardest thing for me because i don't normally get that far to finishing them. But i have painted it with watercolour on a Reeves watercolour board, 22.5cm by 15cm. I would really appreciate all advice on how to improve it and any suggestions for background. I was thinking maybe thistley things infront of the spaniel to contrast in texture, but then what about in the distance. Thanks to whoever's reference photo this is from the RIL, i noticed that somebody has also painted from it recently.
Thanks.
Rob.

Rob

This is great, I would keep the BG very undeveloped - especially if you are putting in a foreground

Wow - you've done a lovely painting of the dog. I would agree with keeping the background loose. But if it were my painting I wouldn't add anything to the foreground, it would just take away from the dog and you've done such a beautiful job on him.

Beautiful painting! I'd hold on the background myself, but if you really wanted to add something, maybe the suggestion of a lake with reeds/rushes at the edges and coming into the foreground, or just a blueish loose portrait style background. But I like it as it is

Great job on the dog. I also think you should not do a detailed background keep it vague. I love the dog's eyes very expressive and I like the soft loose style of the ears very pretty.
