Post first soft pastel

<IMG SRC="http://www.wetcanvas.com/Critiques/lib/05-Feb-2001/pastel1.jpg" border=0>

this is my first attempt at soft pastels. I know i have not tried to approach it in a traditional sense..but i thought i would post it and get some pointers. I spent about an hour on this. I was really just trying out my new pastel samples from Terry. (thanks terry ) I wasn't really aiming for anything here just really wanted to know what they felt like against the paper.

Don't you just love it? Looks like you are going to take to soft pastels fast! This one looks good, and Sue Ellen, with your drawing talent, you are really going to do well with pastels. I can't wait to see the next one. Go do another one.

Hi Sue Ellen,

Congratulations on your painting! Both versions are nice, but don't do any more, or you'll loose your first impressions and point of reference. Overworking is easy to do, especially when you're excited about what you're doing.

Please create more in pastel. You have a great start, and it was very wise to just have fun and experiment with the first piece. No pre-concieved notions or techniques used. When you want to focus and learn particular techniques, you can. But for now, just getting the "feel" of the material was a good choice. It's usually at these times we do our best work as well!

Bravo.

Diane

P. S.

The colors and features look so much like your photo...did you use yourself as the model?

Thank you llis,Diane and tag ~

I really like the feeling of the soft pastel...it just moves so nicely over the surface of the paper! i am taking your advise and stopping here (even though i keep wanting to go on and do more.. ) I started another one today so i will keep working with this medium.

Yes i used myself as a model ..i do that a lot.... I actually started with an eye.and the rest just followed....and well ... when i do that they always end up looking like me.

i am excited to get more into soft pastels~
