New to Miniatures

Recently discovered how much fun miniatures are! Here are a couple I just finished. One is charcoal, the other is colored pencil on Lacarte pastel paper. Both are 2 1/2 x 3 1/2... actually the landscape is 2 1/4 x 3 1/2. Thanks for looking

Welcome to Miniatures Dee. They certainly are a lot of fun to paint. I like both of your Minis very much, but especially the second one -- love the colours you have in your hills too. Please post some more.

Val.

The second one has a beautiful meld of color! A real fine looking mini!! And in the charcoal, a nice bit of personality in the woman's face!
Very well done!
Hope you'll be doing and posting more of your miniature work here! Would love to see 'em!!!

Hi Bertoni

I'm new to miniatures too and have just joined the Flowers A-Z project... would be very interested to hear how you all start a small painting and if there are any special types of materials involved. I have a great magnifying glass, lamp, 2.5 x 3.5 pieces of watercolor paper and other kinds of support... paints, etc. I just would like to know how you all paint/draw so tiny!!!!

Thanks for listening! I hope to post soon!

BTW, I have four children (well, 2 children, two adults!), 2 boys in elem. school, a daughter and son in college and not much time to paint and this is why I chose minis. I am currently a member on another board for colored pencil and have been working diligently on value studies to get up to speed in that medium. I am a stay home mom, but still time is limited. Any advice for a newbie to minis would be appreciated! Maybe I can get on ebay someday!

Bertoni, I love your banner!

Thanks again,
Rose

Take a looksee at the post at the beginning of this Forum titled:
"Forum Guidelines, Links & Useful Information"! There's a lot of good info there to get you started producing good minature paintings.
Also look into this one:

Re: New to Miniatures

Bertoni,

Thank you, I have looked there and investigated a lot. I am looking for more of the personal advice, like how YOU get started and motivated to begin a piece. Just the personal touch... I can get all the technical stuff already, just wondered if there was anything that anyone could add that would make it more down to earth and give me a jump start.. :-) I love your paintings on your banner!

Re: New to Miniatures

Rose:
What I did when I started painting miniatures was to get all the books on the subject I could find and immerse myself in the different techniques, mediums and surfaces.
One book I found especially helpful was "Miniature Painting" by Joan Cornish Willies.
Also I checked into all the websites of folks who paint miniatures to see how they went about it. Learned a lot that way! I guess when you know all the size rules for minis, just jump in and do! Glad you liked the paintings next to my signature! They're not miniatures though! Good luck! Post them here when you do some!

Re: New to Miniatures

Thanks for the advice Bertoni. Will check out the book by Joan Cornish Willies. I have heard good things about that book and of course, there are a bunch of wonderful links posted at the top of the forum for mini art. I tried one flower tonight and my WC skills are WAY rusty. May have to jump into them slowly by using wc pencil. I find more control that way! :-)

I appreciate your help.
Do you ever do minis?

Yes I do minis!! ...and have done around 30 of them at this point. In fact am working on one now that's a floral type thing 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"! It will be posted on this forum when I get it done! I'll be having a one man show of my minis on a Town Hall exhibition wall in November. For the last few months I've been doing larger works.

Daffodil. :-) I'm trying out Yupo! :-) Will you be displaying your one man show here too?? Or have you a place already where I can go to see your works? :-)

Re: New to Miniatures

Dee - these are lovely little minis!
Don't know how you managed charcoal for that detailed face!!!!! Wow! My favourite has to be the landscape though
Welcome to minis - they're fascinating.

Re: New to Miniatures

I've pretty much shown all my miniatures to date on this forum, if you go back and check out my earlier entries you'd be able to see them.
