Re: Progression of REGRESSION in color and values
Hi Larry,
I took this picture on the way to work this morning.
There was a lot of moisture in the air, so the effects were easy to see.
The distant trees almost blend with the sky color.

that's cool isn't it Wyn! Certainly one sees its potential as a device in painting to push depth!
thanks for sharing this one...!

Re: Progression of REGRESSION in color and values
Larry, your timing is absolutly excellent. You answered a question I had about color and distance. I knew about color being cooler as you look farther away but this information about yellow is very interesting. Thanks!

Re: Progression of REGRESSION in color and values
no problem Gisele...glad you found it interesting.
Some folks (fearing the power of suggestion I suppose) think that if you are told its there and to look for it, you'll see it because you were conditioned to see it.
Thing is...knowing to look for it increases your chances. Like I said about the crowd...its amazing really that among a sea of 10,000 faces all moving about, small particular distinctions for which you know a particular person will stand out when you set your mind and purpose to find them.
I've been teaching for years...and you'd think you would just get used to the progressive steps for which people learn, but I still find it interesting to note how people will approach their painting with the power of local color in their minds. It too is a type of setting one's mind and purpose, but with the wrong information.
They think..."sky blue, grass green, water blue, snow white" and even though they see a distant mass that is most obviously different ...the fact that its made up of trees is like pushing a mechanical response button inside...and the same color and value applied to trees/masses closer to them is painted on those far away.
That's one reason this thing takes time...no overnight successes. Its a process of reprogramming and rethinking, to retrain the eyes to see. To anticipate what to look for...and funny thing is, to yet be open to see something as though for the first time.
Observing with the knowledge of what has been...but yet with the fresh inquisitiveness of what might be? Not an automatic gear for most to shift into....
take care...

Re: Progression of REGRESSION in color and values
they may be small Elisabeth, but they well show the transition going back...of yellow as a pigment falling off first, then red leaving blue.
feels warmer closer to the viewer (Yellow's presence...color more saturated), coolest farther away.
Elisabeth..I'm excited too to see you are living currently in Sardinia...as back in 1975-76 I was stationed in La Maddalena in the US Navy...and had an apartment in Palau. Loved it there and was hoping to bring my wife who was my fiancee at the time. How cool. Hopefully, we'll see a number of Sardinia paintings posted???
I checked out your website...nice to see your work there!
good having you here....

Re: Progression of REGRESSION in color and values
found a couple other references that are good examples of this regression and progression of color, values and color temperature...from our lake where our family cabin is in upper Michigan...

Larry,
My husband is in the Navy, that's why we're here. We also live in Palau- close enough to walk to bakery & markets, but far enough away not to hear mopeds all night. The shot of my kids playing water guns is looking out back behind our house. We are really enjoying it- we love Palau. The local people are very nice. We are just coming to the end of tourist season which is a relief.
I hope to paint outdoors more & I will send in the results. Even in the short time I've been on WC, among this fine group of painters, it has helped me understand where I need to work harder in my painting- Great discussions!

Hi Ghislaine,
I'm not good with online stuff & could not figure out how to respond, so I went to your website, clicked on your "contact" and responded that way.

Re: Progression of REGRESSION in color and values
I am so glad this was bumped up as I was up on the Avon River,Perth Western Australia, on the weekend and had difficulty getting this scene painted. I am going back in the near future to give it another try. All the grey greens confused me but reading this thread makes a lot of sense.
