school mural WIP

Hi y'all! I'm just getting started on a school mural. This is the second day. The first day I sketched out an eagle pattern on paper and some eagle feathers on the lower wall. I didn't get photos of the sketch work, but here's the computer sketch I submitted for approval. Each feather will represent a "life skill" taught by the school system.

Today we got the scaffolding up (still not high enough; that's the top of an 8-foot ladder in lower right of photo!) and I put in the blue sky and clouds. Then I transferred the eagle sketch to the wall by tracing the outline with charcoal on the back of the paper sketch, taping the paper to the wall, and rubbing with a paper towel on the front of the sketch so the charcoal rubs off onto the wall. Then painted it. I think I'm going to re-do the feet, I'm not quite satisfied with them.

Even with air conditioning on, it's hot up there. It's a 10' square atrium in the center of the school, and hallways go out from each side of it, so it will be sort of a focal point. This is the side you see when you come down the hall from the front door. There are little square windows up above this, and when the sun gets low in the afternoon it really gets hot up there.

It's strong yet soft, just like the real thing. I think too that the quality of your work will inspire many art and non-art students to create more and better, and at the very least to include some art in their lives.

Re: school mural WIP

Thank you all for your kind words!

I spent this week in the school gym, and didn't quite finish. I keep getting moved around to stay out of the way of the cleaning crew. I'll finish that one next week and get a photo of it. Meanwhile, I was back in the atrium, but down on the floor painting feathers.

My thinking on this was that feathers are what enable the eagle to fly. Each feather will stand for a "life skill" such as integrity, courage, organization, flexibility, resourcefulness, etc. and these skills will enable the young people to "fly" in attaining their life goals. Also, native Americans valued eagle feathers and believed they imparted strength, which these feathers also symbolize.

Re: school mural WIP

Thank you Tim!

Here's the eagle in the gym. I think I may have to tweak it a little more. I couldn't reach the highest part of the wing very well, had to practically stand on top of the ladder and stretch and it doesn't look quite right, even though I used a template for the wings. I finished all the feathers in the hallway this week, and finished the clouds up above. There will be some sort of inspirational quote up there, and then I can move the scaffold to the cafeteria for the next eagle mural.

The eagle flying with this banner and slogan was requested by the school principal.

Re: school mural WIP

This is in the main hallway. The eagle's wings will be atop two bulletin boards titled "principal's pride" which will spotlight special events and accomplishments. It's about 8 feet long from wingtip to wingtip. Can't get a straight-on photo.

Re: school mural WIP

What a huge undertaking for you Ruth. Is this the biggest job so far? Have you got to finish everything before the next semester.
This eagle looks superb

Re: school mural WIP

This is the last piece of the project. It's on the cafeteria wall and will depict an eagle with wings spread as if protecting children of different races and ethnic groups. There will be a banner with the school name below the children.

This is the first day's work. Each wing is 8' from tip to eagle body. Children are life-size.

...more to come...

Ruth
