Here is a little animal I sketched today - Wet Canvas member "silverflagon"'s old dog - Chips.

Re: Basic 101: Class 22 - Drawing Animals
Thank you ladies for your sweet comments! I will try to get at least one more in here this week. I'm working a few lessons at once here, plus pastels, acrylics, oh, and pets on rocks and my day job!

Re: Basic 101: Class 22 - Drawing Animals
Here I am dragging this classroom out of time -- thanks for looking, C&C very welcome.
I am attaching two drawings, both loons. One I posted in the D&S forum about a month ago. Then I started the more complicated version, not realizing that animals were coming up in the classroom. So that I could finish this version I skipped class 21. My photo seems a bit grainy, natural light is not abundant here to day.
Here is the link for the first drawing

Many thanks for your time and comments.

Hi Paul -
Nice .
Good shapes, and a good range of shades. Also I like the variety of strokes, for example how you suggest the fur texture.
Well done .

Re: Basic 101: Class 22 - Drawing Animals
HI. Well I had a go at my first dog. Whilst reading about sketching dogs I also found out about indenting, so had a go at that during this drawing.
Unfortunatley I went a bit overboard with the indenting-but what a good learning exercise that proved to be, so despite the dog not looking like a golden retriever I feel I did enjoy having a go with the indenting and am more aware now of where I could possibly use it in the future.
It looks so dark, yet a golden retriever is light. How can I make it look more matching in colour to a retriever?
Thanks, Lyn

Lyn -
Well done . The likeness is very good, and the texture of the fur is believable. As far as I can judge on the small picture. Normally you don't post that small, how come?

How do you draw or paint 3 white eggs on a white cloth? By drawing the shadows. Same for white fur. That is the principle, you can find more in the Mike Sibley book, for instance p.229. And it is regularly discussed in the main forum. As it happens, there is an active thread on white dogs right at this moment.

Re: Basic 101: Class 22 - Drawing Animals
Thanks Arnoud, will give it another go. No, normally my images are huge aren't they? Was trying to learn about desizing, so experimented in GIMP so that I will know next time when I have the ref photo plus my example to show side by side. Still learning about all this technology bit also.
Thanks for that page number too in Mike Sibley's book. Life gets in the way so reading and drawing have taken a step back at the moment.
Thanks, Lyn

Re: Basic 101: Class 22 - Drawing Animals
HI Arnoud- Here is another go attempting to place shadows and highlights more as well as only a little indenting (whiskers). I feel this is much better and resembles more of a retriever. Proportions and perspective are 'out' I know, but I did this in my sketch book mainly to have a go at the white hair. It still did take about 4 hours.
I did read a little of the book which helped although I need to go over and over it to really sink in!!!
