erasing watercolor

Hello here an example showing how to sponge out watercolor in a precise area using masking tape. Left is the original center I applied masking tape and clean it with a sponge right I removed the tape you can see the wiped out area.

It works better with earth colors almost 100 percent and less with very staining colors. If you use it i suggest you to do test on similar paper first like that you won't be sorry or mad about me

to use this technique the paper must be completely dry then you place the tape around where you want to erase and clen it with a soft sponge [ i prefer natural] then blot it with clean tissues do not over do it practice first then remove the masking tape if the paper is delicate let it dry first otherwise do it when it is still wet once again practice before.

This was done over WN watercolour on Arches hp paper. On the left i quickly did the shape of a boat to illustrate you can do any shape.

If you want to rework on the area after a hard treatment you can size it with diluted gum arabic first then let it dry an even polish it with a sooth abrasive they use for cars paint.

This is not new to me but it can be for others
Sorry for spelling mistakes I'm so bad on keyboards
Robert

Re: erasing watercolor

Thanks for the demo. I have tried a similar type of thing by placing pieces of scrap paper either side of where I want to sponge/lift. I am scared of using masking tape on the actual painting. Guess I just need to give it a go and experiment like you said.

Re: erasing watercolor

Hii use a masking tape wich is not to old and test that ithe glue does nt leave a mark on a piece of scrap paper. Sometime on very old one wich has been exposed to heat the glue leaves a mark and some cheap brands are less sticky than others so they re good for that

Re: erasing watercolor

Thanks for the demo. I will be trying this in the future instead of ruining the paper by some other means I have tried. Vera

Re: erasing watercolor

I've always wanted to make those sun rays, but was afraid I would ruin the rest of the picture! This is a neat trick, can't wait to try it, thank you so much for sharing. These are the kinds of things I love about this site.

Re: erasing watercolor

Arches paper has worked the best for me with this technique as far as not tearing the paper when removing the masking tape.

Re: erasing watercolor

Yes Carrie Arches takes almost all punishment

Jc if you re doing thoses sunrays do not over do it and may be once you remove the tape go wth the sponge a little more to soften the edges

Re: erasing watercolor

I have been using drafting tape instead of masking tape lately. Drafting tape is made to use on paper so not as sticky. It does not tear the paper as readily as masking tape in my experience. Others may have different experiences.

Re: erasing watercolor

I have had good success with blue painters tape...does not seem to damage paper...and magic eraser. Make lots of mistakes so have used this method many times (unfortunately won't fix my main problem...faulty composition!)

Re: erasing watercolor

I wish that 3M would make the painter's tape in beige, tan, or white. Masking tape is sided with too much adhesive and will tare the paper or leave some of its adhesive behind. The white artist tape is much too costly for my needs.
