Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
Beautiful work, Dave!
I like the colors & composition very much.
I'm no "expert" but the only suggestion I might say is to deepen/darken the shadow areas to add a bit more contrast. Maybe play with the reflections a little more.
Nice work. I myself am getting back into CP after a break of working in other mediums.
Do more of these! Great job!

I like the back lighting and the colors. The whole roundness of it. Are you happy with it? Great job! wanda

Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
This is gorgeous! Looks like a lot of fun! I tried taking photos of marbles in a crystal glass the other day but couldn't get any that I was satisfied with.
I think yours are great, love the colors and composition! Way to go

This is really good for your first CP drawing. I agree with the others, try adding some more shadows in. Also, I think there's something missing and I think it's "colour". Can I suggest you add in a little purple or a little pink here and there? It would bring it more to life and give it a boost of energy. At the moment, it all seems too much of the same colour. But apart from that, it looks great.

Dave
What I've noticed about your threads is that you tend towards the monochromatic, that is even when you use colour - there is actually very little of it, or very little variation within the painting. This, for example, is a monchromatic green painting with a bit of blue. Now being a bit of a colour fiend, I personally don't find your pictures as appealing as some others - but each to his own. That's a question of taste rather than skill and you certainly can draw well.
Why do you think that your use of colour is so limited? Is it just preference on your part ie that's just the way you see it / like it? Do you feel confident using colour?
Just interested - no criticism intended or implied.

Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
Dave, I think you'll enjoy using regular colored pencils in your work rather than the watercolor colored pencils.
You've got the drawing skills, so drawing with color is going to be a natural for you. Do you already own any regular cp's? I like your draftsmanship, composition and execution in this piece, but I do hunger for some more depth in the color range. However, a monochromatic palette can be very effective, and is used by many cp artists.
It's great to have you here with us. You'll find we're constantly asking questions and offering opinions!

Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
chocolatyclaire,
thanks ,you are quite right I do need to add more colour, inexperience and limited palette is my problem, I need to invest in some new CP.
Katherine T,
thanks for your input and honesty, that's what I'm here for,as above really, limited palette and inexperience with colour pencils,I'm sure you will see a change in my drawing as time goes on.
It also depends on the subject that is chosen at the time, and what colours are naturally in that subject, other wise it wont look realistic.
present,
thanks you are too kind, I do like to get around the forums don't I.LOL!
BKWYRM,
Thanks for your support, no I don't actually have any colour pencils at this present time only water colour ones, but they are on my shopping list.
Feel free to ask as many questions and make as many comments as you like, I'm here to learn.
Flame Lily,
thanks, practice makes perfect,so they say.
JayD,
sorry beat you to it, thanks anyway.Still learning about layers, techniques and patients within my art.
Thank you every one, Dave.

Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
Looks like I've found another great work I haven't commented on yet. Sheeesh you guys need to slow down so I can catch up.
Dave this is wonderful! I myself really like the pallet you have on this one. It will be fun to watch you break into more colors but in the meantime I very much enjoy monochrome work (and it's even more fun if another color is introduced to help highlight a feature).
Are you using your wc pencils wet or dry (or both)? I think you've done a great job in getting some good contrast with your limited pallet. What you could try if you want is to use an indigo blue (or whatever very dark blue you have in your set) to go over your very darkest darks. Use it dry. Then cover that with your dark green again. This will give you a very deep color. If you want a near black, use your darkest red as well... if you do that though you'll want to incorporate a bit of red into the rest of your picture.
This is a wonderful work and with just a few touches to deepen your values I feel it could be even more outstanding!
I'm looking forward to watching for even more work from you now!

Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
Karen Cardinal,
these comments coming from outstanding artist's like you and everyone else here in this forum are very inspiring and also very helpfull, thank you.
My limited palette is so limited that I do not even have a dark blue or even a red pencil,I desperatly need to invest in some new pencils, they are just very expensive here in he UK.
I always use these water colour pencils dry.
Cheers,Dave.

Re: Marbles on Glass Rail,CP.
i agree with drawing more layers - a few more colours would be good too, it doesn't look quite finished as it is... having said that, your drawing technique is exceptional and personally i'm still too green to even attempt glass yet - well done!
