My Marbles
At least now we know where to find 'em
I thought I'd post this, just now folks will think I've forgotten about my doing glass promise
The ref is by mustcreate and is in the RL, thank you mustcreate!!
I'm really just copying the picture, what I would call rendering the photo. Learning how to go about representing glass. These marbles are not quite finished, but I'll have to work through the rest of the marbles first and the bg before I can do final tweaking.
White Stonehenge...about 10"x8" with Prismacolour.
C&C welcome!
Meisie

Re: My Marbles
Oh Meisie... I'm so tickled that you're (finally ) doing your glass drawing!
This looks great already! You're doing a terrific job of keeping your white areas white and getting all those little bubbles and imperfections in the marbles. You're even getting some great looking depth in your red marble already!
I'm glad that you are leaving yourself some tooth to add more layers once everything is in. I've always had to add more at the end to pump up darks and lights and bring elements together.
The only suggestion I would make is to be very aware of your values with this work. Use your value viewer (I use a plain white piece of cardboard with a hole in the middle sometimes) to keep rechecking the values of the original and your artwork. It's the values that give the illusion of glass not the colors. You have quite a bit more darkening that needs to be done to really create the shine and illusion that you want.
You are well on your way with this though! I love what you've done so far!
 Keep going!

Re: My Marbles
The marbles are looking great I found the same photo reference and will watch yours carefully before starting mine. It's alot easier . I like to work with the black stonehenge and was thinking about doing mine on black, but I love yours.

Re: My Marbles
Oops, forgot to ask you something. What do you think these would look like burnished?

Oustanding job so far Way to go Meisie, honestly I don't think you could go wrong with this - you've got such a good start. Thanks for sharing
Shiela, I would so love to see you do marbles on black stonehenge, that'll be so interesting and with your skill I know they'll look great - I'm looking forward it.

Re: My Marbles
Thank you folks! I appreciate the comments and support
I have no idea what I'm doing here...just copying what I see! I know I'll learn lots in this one It is more fun than I expected....
Karen thank you for the tip on te values, I will definately bear that in mind...tell me if I'm not pushing the values enough ok?
Sheila, they are burnished already, looks more grainy on here than in rl, and when I add final layers I will burnish for sure I'd also like to see marbles on black....
I hope to have a bit of time today to work more on the blue one, to bring it to the same stage as the others.

Re: My Marbles
Meisie, This is breathtaking! I can't believe my eyes.
This is also very tempting. Now I have to start studying glasses but I doubt if I can touch half of yours.
Unbeliveable
Saeed
P.S. Something I learnt from (the left side of) your painting: Keep the palette for later reference! This is probably the easiest way to keep it.

Re: My Marbles
Oh Saeed, do try the glass! There's lots of marbles pictures in the reference library here at Wetcanvas!
Thank you for your encouragement too.... Oh and yes, I often make little notes about the colours used on the border. Especially when I work on multiple pieces and annot keep the pencils together in a jar. Here I grouped the colours together for each marble, as I expect that I'll have to go back to work on them more later, especially once I add the background. So far I've only started on adding some of the reflections, to ground them somewhat.

Right now I'm wondering how I'm going to get the grey for the background...I'm looking for an 'alive' grey

Hey Meise !
How about some warm grey(medium) and a light brown ( perhaps Van dyck brown) in light layers one after another
untill you get the effect you want?
I am still looking

Re: My Marbles
Oh that background should be fun. Lots of spots with reflected color.
On my monitor it is orange-y gray in the upper righthand corner, turning into a pinker more lavender-y gray near the highlight, then morphing back into a warm orange-y gray in the lower left corner, but darker.
I would put cloud blue and greyed lavender as a "primer" coat in the upper left section near the highlight to prevent it getting too dark. In the orangey darker sections, I'd play with Indigo blue, sepia, and henna or terra cotta in the beginning. Next to the bright red reflections and the orange reflection, you could transition the grayer bg with some poppy red over your gray. If I'm worried about possibly getting too dark in an area, I put my lighter colors down first, sort of as a preventive measure. Probably the wrong way to do it--but it helps me keep a lighter touch!
This will be fun!
