Negative Leaves and Found Flowers

I washed the Paper with color on this one, let it dry ,then began pulling out all the leaves I could muster. Sometimes finding them with Pencil and sometimes just with a Brush, Later I developed the Flowers, from the saved White spaces which were originally Gradated White spaces on the Paper. My Boat Antidote. LOL
This is the result with some details following:

Some Detail:

It is time consuming but Fun. Hope you enjoy it.
June

Re: Negative Leaves and Found Flowers

I know where you are. I think I was thinking Trumpet Flowers. I wanted to draw the eye up to some white space and that was all that was left. I tried to connect the white spaces but ended up filling them all in as I am want to do,so I left it for a resting place and also to go around it and back down to the other white spaces.
I guess what I am saying is that I wanting to leave more white space and that was it. Make any sense?
I wanted to abstractthe Flowwers , but didn't ,except there, so I left it....I tend to Nit - Pick ,from doing Boats.

Re: Negative Leaves and Found Flowers

This is really impressive, June. A real feast for the eyes! I know what you mean about time consuming but fun. This is the kind of thing that's nice to have on the go on the side for when you get tired of working on other pieces. Love the closeups! They really show what a wonderful touch you have with your brushwork and control.

IMO what it needs is some larger dark areas. The closeups work well because they have them. In the larger piece the darkest areas appear smaller and don't have the same impact as a result. I'd put at least one next to the large white flower about where the purple colours are. Others may disagree.

Just take it from someone who paints fish with fingers.

Re: Negative Leaves and Found Flowers

Hi June,

I really like negative painting because it forces you to think in a totally different way about what you are doing. When it works, as it did here, it is fascinating.

I was thinking the same as Doug, that area on the upper right just looks like you walked away and left it before you were finished.

Then I read your explanation and understand about leaving white. However, that much white makes those flowers into your focal point (our eyes are drawn to white before other colors according to studies I've read about in some color theory articles). As such, it seems pretty diffuse. Maybe you could add just a tiny bit of detail (not as much as the other flowers though) to give shape to the flowers beyond the red centers.

It really is a wonderful work.

Sylvia
