EL Toro The Bull In A Wip

Hello Everyone,

Here's new commission that I got it is 12" X 16" on canvas working in Acrylics. I just have a base cost down so far. Oh it was hard to scan the hole
thing it was to big. I don't like how the Bull's nose is pull out by the ring.
I talk with the owner lastnight about this, to see if she would like me to not paint the ring and cable and halter. I think it would look better without it
what do you all think? This way his nose and mouth would look better.
All C&C Welcome!

Jody

Gosh, What a subject Jody! I thought it was wierd when someone asked me to paint a cow! Did you get to meet your subject? I agree with not painting the ring and cable, etc.
Best wishes,
Barbara

Barbara,

They raise and show the bulls ,I think they are going to give the
painting to someone as gift. That shows the Bulls for them. She email me
this morning and said to leave the halter and ring and cable out of the painting. So now I have got to fix the nose and mouth, I just hope that
I can get it right. I have been looking at pictures all morning trying to
found one that looks like this bull.LOL It is a Black Brangus.
No I didn't get to meet the bull LOL he is in Texas!
Thanks Barbara for looking and your lovely comments!

I love angus, (he is angus isn't he?) I have always wanted to do a cow! Nice start. I too say no ring, I hate those things although I realize bulls can be pretty fiesty and they need something. But..ow!

Re: EL Toro The Bull In A Wip

Well if the owners agreed to have the ring and halter out of the painting and it works better for you then thats awesome.

But when looking at the reference you can clearly see that it is a show bull. I personally would leave the ring in but have it sitting down, and not looking like it's being pulled on. Im not to sure about the halter though, with it in you would be able to tell that its a show bull, but with nothing, do you think that it might only look like just a clean kept bull , and not as much a show bull?(I don't know). But this all depends on how they want the bull to be precieved.
That's just my little opinion.

Re: EL Toro The Bull In A Wip

Here's what I see. I think that the eye needs to be moved more to "our" right and the nose needs to come out more to the right, and also up more. It's really hard for me to explain how so. so to make things easier I played around on psp and fixed what I thoughtn it needed. Hope that you don't mind but I'll post it. Open both attachments side by side and hopefully you will see what I did, there isn't a whole lot of change just a subtle one that I think helps!!

Re: EL Toro The Bull In A Wip

Hello Jody

I love the hugeness of bovine subjects - they have such presence. I would rather look at cows and bulls than horses!

Our big friend there doesn't look at all comfortable with all that stuff attached to him - I agree that eliminating them will make for a better portrait. Your drawings are great - such texture! In the last one you've elongated his nose to make it less piggy and more bull-like and it looks good, but I think it will need more modelling. I can't advise you on how to go about that in acrylics, though, as I enjoy them but have limited experience. Good luck!

Re: EL Toro The Bull In A Wip

EJ,

Thank you for looking at my work and helping me. I am so loss with this Bull, I don't know what to do.LOL I talk with the owner lastnight they are going to try and send me a new picture of him . We don't have any cows or bulls that are brangus around here where we live. That I could look at to work from. But we do have some beefmasters next door. I am going over today and see if I can get some of them to come to me and let look at them. Thanks again. Oh I agree with the other bull picture it does have pig like nose LOL. I have never spent this long on anything LOL.
I am learning as I go.

Jody
