April 2005 Classroom - Street Scenes HOMEWORK
It occurred to me that some people may have preliminary questions about their choice of scene etc. So I have decided to post this Homework thread early so that any queries can be dealt with here.
Here's the TUTORIAL .

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes Homework
Yes Doug. Interestingly enough I am doing a street scene in the wc class that I am taking.
Are we going to draw this from scratch? Are we to pick out our own street scene? I am sure that I will come up with other questions but these are the main ones to start with as if we do pick out our own, I need time to review my photos from our trip as I did try to take a bunch of street scenes and do want to learn how to paint them (hence the class that I am taking). Frankly, feel like I am learning more on this forum than paying for the class as he sort of makes it up as he goes along and his reference is not a photo but a previously painted scene, I know copyright questions but I am just learning not selling. Anyway, I am sure that we will learn tons more from you.
Now I need to work again on my portrait as a halt had been called to that one with the challenge that I had this time and my PC project and birthdays and beach and work and.......... excuses. Sure wish I could stay at home and paint a lot more.
Sign***** back to work. (the one I get paid for)

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes Homework
Yes, Judy, you'll be drawing this from scratch - I have taken stage photographs and will be posting them in the classroom tutorial thread which will soon be a sticky at the top of the Gallery. I am also working on one of Knaresborough at present.
Hopefully I will explain the basic concepts well enough for you to choose your own photograph if you wish, and will be pleased to see the results. The tutorial will start in earnest on 1st April so as not to overlap with Genna's classroom on Portraits.

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes Homework
Oh I am sure I will be pleased, you are aces for perspective and I love your street scenes. This teacher just draws out a template and gives it to us to trace so that we can get right to painting. There are about 15 in the class (which I think is way too many ) and he paints along with us which is also fine but he is thinking out loud while he is doing it, no planning ahead, including the color mixes. So I am trying to take away what I can, do my own color mixes or some that please me for the particular scene and enjoy the company of other painters. I have tried to tell these folks about WC but they seem content just going to this class weekly, month by month and just doing different scenes. I prefer the path that I have chosen and look at all the neat folks I have met so far.

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes Homework
I should have said that if you don't feel confident about a full street scene with a central vanishing point, an easy way is to try an oblique view of one side of the street which will have a single main vanishing point at one side such as this one:
Hanna's House at Knaresborough:
Or this - Northville, Michigan:

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes Homework
Gotcha Doug, see learning already LOL. This will be exciting as I think I will go through some of my photos as I know I took both of these types of perspective. Something I really need to learn about, perspective that is and the drawing part. Will just by 12 inch ruler work or will I need my 36" LOL?

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes
Okay, I hope to be jumping on board...
(but then I also hope to be working soon also, so... LOL... not much time when I'm working)... but well, we shall see how all that pans out....
So, Doug... let me make sure I am understanding....
> we can use our own photos or use the one that you put in when the class actually starts up, right????
> we will not post our work or progress in HERE, on this thread - this thread is for your tutorial and teaching... correct????
You know, there are just some fine little villages all around me here in Ohio... I'm about 1/2 hour away from Amish country... there is farmland allll around me and lots and lots of little townships and villages... Village of Navarre, Canal Fulton, Bethlehem Township... just some wonderful places, all with some wonderful architecture... YUMMMM!!!!!

Re: April Classroom - Street Scenes Homework
Vasilk Doug has a thread around here somewhere about rolling rulers.. He uses one when he is doing his perspective stuff..
I bought a Rolling Ruler just like THIS ONE and took it to England with me so Doug could teach me how to use it..BUT we were so buy that I forgot all about it..
So now I have this expensive RR, (mine coast 30.00 AUD) sitting in my art bag and I still don't know how to use it..

I see JJ.. it looks interesting... it seems there are plenty of sites on the internet about rolling rulers... just googled for "how to use a rolling ruler" and found plenty of them... here is a simple but good one http://www.rollertec.co.uk/applications.php3 ... this ruler seems to be a miracle but I don't have time to read it now ...
