A jellyfish confession

This might come as a shock...but florals aren't my favorite thing in the world to make. LOL

My favorite thing to do at the torch is PLAY...experiment with ideas and see if I can make them happen.

This is one such experiment. If you were to add all the flops time, and stringer pulling time and holy crap accident time, this bead took me about 6 hours to make. LOL

In actuality it took about an hour and is the first successful prototype. A lot of really ugly beads went into this one. This one isn't perfect, but it is headed in the right direction finally and I wanted to share.

Please let me know what you think...good and bad.

~~Mary

I'd like to see all the beads that you made leading to this BEAUTIFUL one. That way, i could see the thought process in real time and how your mind works to create a bead that looks as good as this one.

Re: A jellyfish confession

Thanks Rich! I am afraid the ugliest ones went straight into the bowl of water and are in jellyfish heaven. Most of the time went into making the tentacle stringer. I had a really hard time getting the balance of white right so when I pulled it out they didn't just disappear. That was the hardest part of the whole thing.

I do have one picture though, of my last attempt right before this one. I actually liked it until I took the picture of it and realized that the jellyfish blended into the background too much. That is why I made the one last night with silver foil over the base and much lighter blues for the water. It helps the jellyfish not disappear.

Thanks again!
~~Mary

Wow Mary!

He's great! You obviously have alot of patience.

And I really like the second one you showed also. Very subtle, and kind of a surprise to find him there. Actually, very much like they really are.

Keep showing them!

Re: A jellyfish confession

Jellyfish are the coolest!!

I really like your bead!!!! There is a very underwater feeling with it. Isn't it interesting that by taking a picture you can see more clearly what's happening with the bead? I agree that the foil and the lighter blues help make the jellyfish stand out. The jellyfish in the bead without the foil has a more 'floaty' quality to it. You can see the underside of the body and the tenticles seem whispier. I'm looking forward to seeing what developes from all your work. Beautiful!!

Have you been to Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA? They have tanks of jellyfish I could just sit and watch all day.

Yes, it took forever. LOL I had tried it last year on the hothead, but the minor allows me to make much larger canes, which is what I needed to be able to pull it down without being too thin. Also, each strand of white is encased in clear before it was built into the cane because if not, it just bleeds away.

Now that I know it will work, I can't wait to play around with more colors!

Thanks all you guys!

Re: A jellyfish confession

Very cool.

I like both of them for different reasons. The first I like that you added the silver so we can see the jelly. The jelly does stand out more. I like this lighter blue better than the darker of the second bead. I like the second one a lot because you are seeing the bottom of the jelly, like it is swimming away from you. In the first one, the jelly body kinda looks like a flower. Like a smooshed cased cane rose. I like the motion of the second jelly better.

Mary, late last year, I visited the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. Both have large jellyfish exhibits, so I've seen jellies close up. Your beads are so close to looking like the real thing, it's amazing. They are fantastic. Please make many more.

Re: A jellyfish confession

You guys are too sweet, and I really do appreciate the compliments and advice!

When I lived in Baltimore I was a member of National Aquarium in the Inner Harbor there. Not a week went by that I wasn't THERE. I love everything about it and still have the site bookmarked even though I haven't set foot in the place in almost 15 years.

Jellyfish are almost hypnotizing, the way they move and glow. I can't even pretend to believe I will ever capture all that in glass, but I am perfectly happy to spend a few years trying. My next victims are the stingrays, which are my personal favorite, but not nearly as handsome. LOL

As far as eBay goes, besides for the 2 beads in this thread, there were 4 others that although they weren't good enough to sell on their own, I included them as surprises in my auction win packages over the past several weeks. I don't even remember who got them...I just tossed them in as extras like I always do.

It has taken me quite a few months to get this far with the jellyfish (slow learner LOL), so who knows when I will sell any of them, but I am sure I will eventually. In the meantime, watch out cuz you never know when one of these little suckers might float by and sting ya. Especially if they know where you live hint hint.

Speaking of which, I have been stung before and it isn't pleasant. I had one float past me and left a narrow line of blisters across my shoulder and my lower neckline. Burnt like fire and I got NO sympathy. LOL

I am off to bed I guess. Too much coffee. I will post pictures of the tentacle cane Tuesday. Not good enough light during the evening and the cane is small, so will have to wait til I will be home during the day. LOL

Mary they are truly stunning. I can't imagine all the owrk that went into that cane. I am just mastering simple 3 color canes. When I use to boat we'd often sail through big pods of them all floating and bobbing. They are so mezmirizing. I lust for a salt water tank again something about fish is so tranquil.

Mary! I'm a member of the Monterey Aquarium!! I don't have time to go every week - but I LOVE it! They have a great jellyfish section (even on their webiste they have a pretty good jellyfish section!)
A few months ago- they had a Chihuly exhibit called Seaforns (if I remember correctly) right next to the Jellyfish section - was I in heaven or what?

Re: A jellyfish confession

I am going with Toni and Cyndi - the second picture, but the bead before? Is so quiet and realistic looking. It does pop, but like a real one blends softly.

And now I am going with absolutely everyone else when I say they are both incredible. I mean absolutely incredible! Those Japenese bead makers that you are watching are starting to rub off on you, Mary Moth! (Wish they would rub off on me, too!)

My question is what sort of glass are you using? And if you stated that, please forgive me - I was so enamored with the bead that detail may have escaped my notice...

Mary. That bead is incredible! It is so realistic! With you skills I have no doubt that you will continue to take this concept to a totally new level!

Trishki, I was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in about '03 ~ this was before I had a torch or anything. They had an incredible glass exhibit there of jellyfish. I was in awe but don't recall the articst (CRS syndrome). Is Chiluly's that a permanent exhibit perhaps? ~Juliet

Re: A jellyfish confession

Your jellys are just wonderful! I've been playing with them on and off for the past year...grrrrrrr. NOT making much progress. I keep getting tons of bubbles when I "push" the cane into the bead...very frustrating!

You've got it figured out perfectly, and the beads truly have a dreamy underwater feel!
