Need help identifying painter

Not sure if this is the right forum but if not please redirect me...

I'm trying to find the name of a painter I ran across in my museum browsing a few years ago.

He is/was an expressionist painter, I believe European, who was noted for his very abstract and intense oil paintings of faces. As I recall he did very realistic works for many years seeking to deeply understand the human face. Only after this did he change gears completely. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I've looked on the web but the context seems to be too general to get meaningful search results. If you can give me pointers on how to do a better-targeted search that would also be helpful.

I found his abstract faces exceptionally powerful, and took note of his approach. Rather than tackle abstract painting directly I've concentrated on realistic drawing/painting to develop an understanding of visual language even though my goal is to eventually do serious abstract work.

Thanks for taking a look.

A few more clues?

Do you recall the period of time he was working generally?
Area of Europe?
small or large works?
palette generally (color scheme)?
Do you have a memory re nationality of his name? French? Italian? German?

Re: Need help identifying painter

Thanks for the responses. I knew it was a long shot with such sketchy info, I was hoping the subject of faces and what he did to get there would ring a bell with someone. I've looked through some sites on European expressionists but there are just so many I finally gave up.

Thanks again,

db

Sounds sort of like Alexei Jawlensky
