Scale in Miniature Art

In order for a piece to qualify for miniature art, does it need to be a certain scale? I thought I read something about it needing to be 1/12 or 1/6 the actual size, I can't remember which. If it isn't, then it would not be miniature, it would be a small format painting.
Does anyone know anything about this?
What distinquishes a miniature painting from a small format painting?
I am new to the miniature world, but I have been really enjoying the mini-madness, and have done twelve in about a week.

Re: Scale in Miniature Art

Blu, different miniature art societies and organizations have different requirements. If you wanted to enter a show, you would need to research the specifications for that particular show. I will try to get some links up tomorrow to various organizations and put them in a sticky thread as a reference for the members. You raise an important issue, and because it is not uniform, we have decided not to set a specific scale requirement for our forum here.

Re: Scale in Miniature Art

Dollhouse scale is 1/12 of what a regular painting would be.

For a 'miniature' the subject must be at 1/6th the size of what you are portraying.
If you have a tiny painting that is 3x3" for instance and have painted a single rose on it. This is NOT a miniature - it is a SMALL FORMAT painting.
The rose would have to be 1/6th the size of the actual blossom.

Regards,
Jillian

I'm glad to hear that the forum won't be restricted to the official requirements. I'm new to mini/small format paintings and would hate to have to worry about MATH TOO!

No official requirements here. I don't see why we can't include even 'small format' as that is gaining popularity, too.

I agree that 'small format' should also be allowed.

Yes, I agree. Linda Blondheim replied in another forum that her 4x6" work is too 'large' - she is an artist of great standing in the southeast USA, and probably the world. We would suffer a great loss if she couldn't join in!!!!
My 2 cents worth!

Jillian

Re: Scale in Miniature Art

The only thing I can think is perhaps to suggest an small format sub forum of the Miniature's one.
It has cost us so long to get the miniatures forum, that maybe we can wait a little to have a sub forum.
