Question Cowboy2 in pastel this time

I did this good old Cowboy when I was getting happy with palette knife in March.
Put down the oils for a while and tried the new stuff.

It was only 2 hours so it is as good as it is going to get for now, but I am both happy and a little stuck with this new stuff.

I am doing pretty nifty stuff all with hard pastels, which makes me thrilled to be so portable. I bought a watercolor block so I am neater and cleaner. And I find I can actually use fixative on it and it holds really well.
BUT and I am sure when I get into it with a wider range of chalks, it will be less limited but I feel TOOO colorful.
I like using color and when I get tired of pastel, I am sure my oils will JUMP from the experience, but I seem stuck in the complements.
I underpainted green to red and like I said, maybe it was just the time thing, but with a loose style does it read or just look like Christmas???

Hi dj*!
I really like this ol' character.

I'm not so sure about the red over green at the top left tho'. It leaps forward too much and draws attention away from the cowboy. The background on the shadow side works and sits back where it should. But the light background doesn't work as the light equivalent of the shadow side, IYSWIM.

Another great portrait, tho'. Keep 'em coming.
best wishes
sandra
