5.45 from Waterloo
Another painting done totally with sponges. Painting with sponges makes one "think" differently and should stand me in good stead when/if I go back to brushes, although it's way too much fun to consider that just yet
16" x 12" Canvas. Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Oxide, Burnt Umber, Napthol Red and Zinc White.
Mike Finn
ps the frame is a digital one.

This is my favorite so far, by far.

Re: 5.45 from Waterloo
I cant say it's my favourite of your sponge jobs so far, but I certainly like it, they are all good. I'll bet your having fun and I can imagine it will have some impact on the way you look at brush painting when you return...
Cheers

Re: 5.45 from Waterloo
I was going to say something, but lost my train of thought. Oh yeah. nice sponge work! I wonder if your the first to stick totally with sponges? Digital frames are the cheapest ones I can find.

This has a beautiful ghostlike quality, I imagine it should be a favorite with collectors of train memorabilia or history buffs.

Re: 5.45 from Waterloo
Thank you all for your comments. I have found one problem and haven't figured a solution yet and that is photographing of the paintings. Because the sponge lays down the paint basically in a series of fine dots, some extremely fine, and as a digital image is also made from dots (pixels), one gets a blurred image in parts where the dots are smaller than the pixel size. Kinda difficult to solve unless one uses a really high res camera, one loses the subtle tones and details. But Christmas is just about here so everyone is welcome at my house for a glass or two of Chablis or a nice Merlot.... Merry Christmas all.

Re: 5.45 from Waterloo
Merry Chrissy etc to you too Mike..hope you have a good one. Even when using a high res camera the resizing necessary to produce a 500 pix wide image leads to much information loss. I use a Pentax 6x7, which takes very large transparencies for my nature photographs. Whenever I photograph Casuarina pines the needles always look blurred, as they are only a couple of mm across and the film grain isnt fine enough at a wide angle photo distance to clarify them...can be frustrating, so I know what you mean.
Cheers

Hi Mike,
I am brand new here - my very first time to "Post Reply" - I had a question about your sponge painting whether it was oil or acrylic
Either way it is fabulous

Hello Sharon... It's acrylic. I doubt one could do it with oils considering the relative drying times. One must let one application dry before applying the next and there are quite a few Still..good question.
Let me be the first to welcome you.... Stay around and enjoy the company of some "great" and some "keen" artists.... and we would love to see what you are working on
