bathroom mural WIP

Hi y'all. Here's what I'm working on this week. Client knew she wanted an Italian sort of scene with the white houses with orange roofs on the mountainside, bay with boats, and sort of a terrace. I sent her some photos and sketches, and we came up with a plan. Here it is sketched lightly onto the wall over the bathtub. They painted the room light yellow, using eggshell type paint, so I could use charcoal to sketch with, knowing it would wipe off easily if I made a goof.

I started adding color in the sky first, then the distant mountains, and worked my way to middle ground. The houses and trees are very loosely indicated with big brush strokes, no detail. Also indicated roughly where the still life will go on the ledge, very loose, just dabs of color.

I bought house paint to match the colors of the tile around the tub, and used that to paint the ledge, columns and arch. This is also just roughly indicated, there's more to come.

After we got started on sketching this scene, client decided she wanted some more done on the adjoining wall, over the toilet. There was some architectural stuff started on the wall and not ever finished, sort of a recessed area around the back of the toilet, but it only went up the left side and across the top, and stopped there. She wanted me to make it look right. Attached are same 3 steps, charcoal sketch, first pass with color, and second pass with color for this part of the mural. There will be some red flowers added in with the greenery.

All this is 3 days' work, not including time spent doing preliminary sketches, e-mailing ideas back and forth, etc.

Love-love-love it, Ruth. This is the kind of thing that can really lower someone's blood pressure & stress level, and should be covered by health insurance.

Re: bathroom mural WIP

Thank you all for taking the time to look and comment! Clients were very happy with it. This is part of a complete master bedroom and bathroom redecorating for Christmas. They will apply a couple of coats of Polycrylic for protection, and it should last for years.

Thanks Sissy! What are YOU doing up? I couldn't sleep because of weather changes, cold front coming through and I ache all over!

Okay, get going on the pizza place, and post pictures. You'll get lots of encouragement here.

Ruth

Re: bathroom mural WIP

Amen to the jealousy!! I totally covet her ability to put so much life into something, with what in close up seems to be a mere smudge. Ive tried this, and mine looks....LIKE A MERE SMUDGE!! And the little dabs of colors you dont even see or notice until inspecting what possibly could be making it look so realistic, with such loose strokes. Truly amazing!! As always!

Re: bathroom mural WIP

Thanks for your jealousy, Laurie and Goodman I'm flattered. The secret is, I'm just lazy, don't like to paint details, and it's amazing how much you can get away with by just suggesting. The trick is to get lots of colors going in everything. For example, a vase of flowers ... I scumble an all-over vase color, then scumble a shadow cooler color over that, letting some of the first color show through, then scumble a lighter warmer color on the lit side, then a couple of highlights and dark accents, a dash of reflected light in the shadow side, and there you are. Greens and foliage have a lot of red, yellow and orange and blue scumbled under and over them, a few highlights and dark accents.

Now you know everything I know
