It's funny, the things you miss...

We had to have one of our two dogs put down 2 weeks ago.

We knew it was time, she was old, (we had her for 15 years,) blind, deaf & sick. We knew she wouldn't make it through another winter so..
My husband & I weren't happy about it but what can you do?

In a twist of fate a few nights ago, our other dog ran away & was hit by a car & killed. She never went on the road, the only thing I can think of is maybe she was looking for our other dog?

That was harder because we were not expecting it but what I am finding odd is when I miss them the most.

For some reason, when I am scraping plates after meals, it seems so strange not to see them standing at the patio door waiting for their scrapings.

How weird is that?

My husband & I have never not had at least one dog. It is such an odd feeling.

Oh, Linda!

I'm so sorry.

Losing one pet is heartbreaking, but losing two in a short span of time must be unbearable. {HUGS} to you.

Oh, I'm so sorry about your dogs...

The weirdest "things you miss" for me has to do with our departed gunea pig. Whenever we would go out to eat, we would bring home the garnish lettuce for him. Kind of like a doggy bag (which we did too), but the "pig-pig" food was quite a ritual. It's probably been a year since he died, but I still get teary eyed when I see that lonely lettuce on a plate when we eat out.

Oh, I'm SO sorry...

I had to put my 13-year-old bestest dog ever to sleep a week ago and I find the times I really miss her to be really odd, as well. There's a big storm coming (she was scared to death of thunder) and I started to go move everything out from under the claw-foot tub so she could "hide" under there... then realized what I was doing and just started bawling... I miss her so much.

Strange that I looked on here and found your thread. I have two younger dogs and I don't know how I would cope if I lost another one right now. I'm so sorry you lost your two dogs so closely together-- how upsetting. I hope another shows up soon. We all need organic dish-washers in our lives!!!

That bites, Robin. I am really sorry to hear you lost your dog.

It has not been too bad for me. I do miss them but they both had a good run. They were pound puppies that ended up with lots of extra years, (with a whole farm to play on & tons of assorted farm-animal poop to eat,) that they wouldn't have had so I really am okay about it. The timing bites but there really is never a good time to lose a pet.

I appreciate the guinea pig loss too. One of my most missed pets ever was a pet rat. She was such a charactor!

Sorry to hear about your dogs Linda, especially the one that you weren't expecting. Sounds like they did have a great life out on your farm what with the smorgesborg of poop (shiver). I look forward to hearing about any new puppies that you bring home.

I miss the dog hair all over everything most of all. I miss Auster nosing me when I was supposed to be done with the computer too. And I miss having a 70lb lap dog. I might get a terrier in a year (apartment living wouldn't be fair to a big high energy dog), but it won't be the same.

Tears are streaming down my face as I read this thread. It's been 13 years since we lost our German Shepard. I'll never get over it. Trouble is, I swear not to ever have to endure that kind of pain again thus refusing to ever get another dog. Guess it's selfish of me but just can't go through it again. I feel so sorry for all of you have lost your faithful pets. I know what you are feeling....

Sorry about your doggies

The strangest/hardest thing for me to deal with after losing my dog of 10 years was coming home to an empty house. It's funny just how *empty* your place can feel when you no longer get greeted at the door every day.

I live with my boyfriend now and he has a big, sweet Great Dane. She's getting up there and I dread the day that I have to say good bye to her.

...It's been two years- I still look down at the foot of my bed, I still step over that area at night. No, your feelings of loss aren't wierd.

Sad.......we had to have our dog put to sleep, too. He was 12, had cancer all over. We buried him beneath the window of our bedroom where he slept every night. Weird, but while we were in that house, I swear I heard him barking in the drive every night. He was such a sweet little thing! CC
