Post me mum

Portraits are about the only art I am interested in doing. People have such life to capture.

This is from my mother's school photograph around 3rd grade or so. Alas I lost the original photo.

I was a junior in high school (I think I was 15, turning 16.) Not knowing better I did it in #2 pencil on regular drawing paper.

I am actually happy with this one. Surprisingly for the medium! Tips on what materials could be better suited?

Well, kiddo.
Not a thing to suggest.
You have an elegant eye and I am there with you. - like to draw those things that vegans don't eat.
If it has fur or skin, or eyes or breath, I am into it.
BUT I am trying leaves.
So, we see drawing and watercolor...
The oil pastels will be interesting, as you know I will be watching with baited breath.

I guess I am really interested in what YOU think it needs.
I only suggest MORE.
Funny, when I was in art school, they made a point about that "muse" thing. People waiting for the "muse" starved. I later found out you can eat ok but starve the "muse." NOW with my wisdom, I am finding all I have to do is open the door and it is there. Keeping my eyes open, my tools ready and my hand willing, I show up, suit up and somehow I paint.
Amazing how many interesting people I find to do and still can't get around to. I have started liking the experience. The subject is sort of sinking into the canvas and paint as I go...
good work,
dj*

Wink

Very well done. I like a drawing that shows me the spirit and feeling in it and this one does.
