As one old enough to remember her live in performance, I'd say you've caught her essence well. Bravo!

I like the shadows in this work, very effective. Also the intricate work on her jewellry.

Have never tried scratchwork, must be a real test for the mind to work in reverse as it were.

Absolutely STUNNING Very nice scratchboard work Calleorange How long have you worked with this medium? I would like to know a little more about scratchboard techniques and the materials used. Maybe you could post a small list of these here? Please post more

re; artdude

Thank you all for your remarks, it means alot me.
I've been working in this style for 14 years now. This scratchboard was done in '96 for a friend who's a big fan of janis and myself. I mostly use a number 11 x-acto, and a reg. SB nib found in the calligraghy sec. of art stores. I draw in pencil on the scatchboard. It's only visible at certain angles or under bright light. I draw from photos, as my work at this size can take up to 40 hrs. I used to take any photo, Xerox it into black and white then start making it darker and darker till only the highlights show up. I wouldn't think about what I was drawing, just drawing the white spots. Before I'd know it, it would come alive. Granted, that was when I first started. I had no way to learn any technique, seeing there aren't many books or ways to refrence scratchboard out there. I have posted more of my SB's in the Other Mediums sec.or you can goto my website and see alot more.
p.s. I also love to draw in pencil, and your right to say it isn't taken, as serious as, other media.
p.s.s. I went to your site.......your work is awesome!

As a native Texan, and one old enough to remember her in live concerts I am very touched by this piece. She had a strong personality, strong voice, and heavy heavy soul. You captured it all. I REALLY like your work
