Web designer?
Ok I have seen alot of you alls websites and they are just stunning! They emphasize the beauty of you alls beads so well. What I want to know is who do you all use? Do you do it yourself? Is it someone local to you? Is it someone here on WC? I have changed the look of my site so many times and I really would like to settle on a look. I have one in mind but.....I dont know how to make it happen. Do you guys??

Amaya,
I'm right there with you. If we can find someone in Orlando who can do this, maybe we can get a volume discount for more than 1 client. Whata ya think?

Re: Web designer?
Hey, you all. I need a website too. I even went so far as to purchase Dreamweaver to make my own, but I found out I had to put down the mandrel to use it, so it sits in the box. I need professional help.

Re: Web designer?
Val - I know exactly what you mean. I purchased Microsoft Front Page earlier this year, but when I realized that I would actually have to choose between learning how to design my website or making beads, the decision was easy. The program is sitting on the shelf doing nothing!

Re: Web designer?
Maybe you are making it all too complicated. Why not try a service like godaddy.com. Then use the website tonight software. I have spent 8 hours tops on my web site. I also did nothing fancy. I know there is some software that is 15 bucks that will upgrade you but I skipped it. I do not know HTML or any other language for web sites. I just shoved it together like I was using Word or any other word processing program. It was real easy and a good way to get started.
I don't think my website is anything special, but I just felt like putting one up.
I am trying to figure out my weekend. I hope to see you all at LOri's house. I just dread driving down and back in one day. It will 5-6 hours total driving. Becky, you know anyone up by me who will be going OGD? Maybe we could drive together?
Amaya and Becky I hope to see your soon!!!

Re: Web designer?
I use godaddy.com's website tonight too and it is okay, but not great if you want to add a shopping cart or anything like that! In fact I was trying to put up an andale store and link the two and now I have managed to crash it lol....It is easy to use if you just want to pop up a home page, gallery or other basic pages though!

Martha, CarolinaBeadDreams?, has been laid off her web designer job. I bet she would fix things up for the web design weary.

Re: Web designer?
I use www.homestead.com
It has a free trial.
It is very easy: drop and drag, etc. If you can use Word or similar, than you can do this.
I personally wanted total control. I am computer "savvy" sort of...I work with geeks (said affectionately) all day long. I am a business analyst for a computer software package.
But, I know this is doable by folks that do Word or similar.
Now...html...diff story! (I goofed my ebay listing bigtime LOL!) Gotta get one of my geeks to work on that).
I plan to set up a website for my mom this weekend, and teach her to maintain it/update it herself. It will be no problem.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Web designer?
I would definately try and go with doing it yourself. It is a very useful skill to learn. If you have someone else build it for you and then don't really get uo to speed with the way it works, you will be dependant on having someone update it and change it for you forever. I know it seems like a big thing, but really is worth putting down the glass for ! I did mine, and was surprised that it wasn't as horrible a task as I thought it would be, it's www.Dragonfishdesigns.com BTW . Fiona

Re: Web designer?
See thats the whole thing. I have the jist of it down. I can pick up certain lines and know what they do or dont do. But its the finer points that I need help with. I do my own site and update it myself, I also do the site for The Orlando Glass Dragons too. But they lack UMPH! LOL I just need someone to tweak it! LOL

Re: Web designer?
Note from a web person: You can get someone to help you and maintain control - keep it both ways. I can update and do sites for people when they don't want to touch them ever again or I can help out tweaking pages and making suggestions on a limted basis - just enough to help!
I agree to never give over control unless you are very comfortable with giving it up or only do it on a limited basis. I've seen too many bad sites that are controlled by the developer and things can - not always but sometimes - get nasty if a disagreement comes up. Even if someone else does the code for you - always get copies of the pages/code so you have it - also usernames, passwords, etc. so you know the basics for your site.
Another note: careful about free trials and WYSIWYG (what you see if what you get) software (like Frontpage and word translator) - sometimes they will embedd into the code more than you want and it makes it harder to work on your site and complicates things. I have used and would recommend Dreamweaver - only one I have ever liked. I have had to clean up Frontpage sites or "translated" pages and don't recommend that - PERSONAL opinion backed by experience.
Places such as GoDaddy have a good startup package cheap and seem to be ok - I have multiple domains registered with them and hosting but haven't used their software so I have no reason to recommend or not. I have considered using the GoDaddy software but have never tried it so just my 0.02
Martha

Re: Web designer?
I do my own website (html), but often need some help from my DH on the code. He's a .
As a matter of fact, if you need help putting a site together, he could do it. I have no idea how much he'd charge, but if you're interested, pm me and I'll ask him.
Take care,
Amy

Okay, I just totally weirded out with the quote thing. I meant to write...
He's a "techie".
See what I mean when I say I need help from him with the tech stuff? Can't even post on a forum correctly!
