Dark Red Rose-WIP
I feel like I haven't posted any colored pencil work for awhile...and I have been working on this on and off for a couple of months. I have been all over the board working on quilts, oil painting, and pastels. I will regain my focus in a couple of weeks, just feels fun to do whatever strikes my fancy on any given day.
If I post it I will have the incentive to finish. I was in the middle of this when I discovered that almost every Prisma that I was using on it is not lightfast. But I guess I'll just put UV glass on it when I frame it.
It's probably better to work the whole piece at once rather than working your way across the paper. But I work on this when I have a few minutes here or there and I work wherever I feel like I can make progress. This is 5 x 6" on Stonehenge.
Posting the ref which is from the Image Lib and then WIP....any feedback welcome. Thanks!

Oh, how I empathize about the lightfast issue! But, I do have to say, this is a gorgeous rendering! I have been doing roses for awhile now because they are my mother's favorite flower and I envy the delicacy of those gorgeous petals! That little flip of the petal on the left side of the painting is so perfect that it looks like I should be able to reach out & touch it!

This is beautiful. I can already sense the velvety texture of the petals.

Can't wait to see how this progresses.

Re: Dark Red Rose-WIP
Just one thing and it may not be an issue at all. The center of the bud appears to be a circle and recedes instead of looking like a solid ( I don't know what it is called) mass of petals. I may be jumping the gun so it is just a thought. I have never done a flower so I am looking forward to following your WIP. This is beautiful as I said before.

Re: Dark Red Rose-WIP
Thanks cathexis! Flowers, especially roses seem to be my therapy. When I don't want to do anything else, usually a flower appeals to me.
Thanks Bill! I'm trying to keep my background "distant" except for right under the roses.
Thanks Meisie! Thanks billiam! Thanks Hezzy! And you were right about the center partially because I hadn't worked that enough. Hope it looks better now.
I am using dark green to get the really dark areas. No blacks, just purples, pinks, reds, cloud blue and white...and dark green.
An update.....(This pic is a wee bit dark, it was on the scanned not digital, raining here today and no sun)

This is coming along beautifully! You're getting that wonderful velvety texture to the rose. Looking forward to seeing more.

Re: Dark Red Rose-WIP
The rose is as finished as it's going to get right now. If I had done this properly I would be celebrating a "finish" right now, but instead I am having to finish the bottom of the picture. And to make matters worse my resource has a hand on the right lower corner. So this will be a challenge in problem solving.
Thanks Sanford, TJ and Marilyn! I appreciate your feedback........

Re: Dark Red Rose-WIP
Hi, I like your rose and how you showed deep places in dark. Beautiful colors. Good job.

Re: Dark Red Rose-WIP
Gorgeous work! I love the contrast between the intense focus on those rich, red leaves and the deliberately vague sky. I'm sure you will solve the problem of the bottom part of the background just as successfully as you have handled the rest. Great work!
