Storing Drawings and Business ?

Hi Everyone,

Have a couple of questions for you all.

1) How does everyone store their drawings? Hubby and I live in an apartment so have limited space. Just found some of my school sketchbooks and I'd like to take the drawings out of the books and store them properly. Do you place tissue or blank paper between them or does it matter? I don't think they've been sprayed with fixatif so I should probably do that as I noticed some of them have smudged.

2) I'm thinking of starting up a portrait business (kids & pets mostly) but am not sure where to start. Does anyone know where I can find info as to how to get started with regards to advertising, pricing, etc.? How many of you on WC also sell your artwork and how did you get started? Also, how do you start a website, one that doesn't cost too much money ? Also, if I posted a drawing on my website and the reference photo was not my own, but the drawing is not for sale, is that an infringement on copyright laws?

Hope I'm not asking too many questions but this site is awesome. Also, should I post separate threads for different questions or can I put a couple of questions together like I did on this thread?

Regards, Donna

Re: Storing Drawings and Business ?

Welcome Donna!!

1) I store mine horizontally flat, and I don't put paper or anything between them, unless it is charcoal or pastel (something that will rub off). What I've discovered is that even if you spray with fixative, when you store them with other things, it smudges anyway. If it something you really want to keep pristine, I would mat and frame it. You can also buy storage boxes (different sizes). I haven't tried these yet, but they look like they would work well. I know that you should keep your storage area dry, and at a cooler temperature, too. And out of any sunlight...

2) There are many resources available on WetCanvas! for selling your artwork. I think many of us here also market our art, and many people do commissioned portraits. Check out this area of WetCanvas for more info about art as a business: WetCanvas! Art Business channel. This has many threads and articles that address your questions about marketing, internet sales and copyright (legal).

Again, welcome!!

Re: Storing Drawings and Business ?

Hi Donna, good avice already so I won't repeat. However, I would like to add one thing I have found out in portrait work is get yourself involved locally. I'm taking a portrait class at a local art center and draw in an small art group where I live. I'm not yet doing this for money, but have gotten a few offers already that I have taken advantage of without even trying or looking. I wouldn't know what you may have in your area, but I greatly suggest researching it to find out.

Word gets around and you will find yourself with much work to do as people will become familiar with what you do. Also, have cards or pamphlets made with your info to your website or email and an example of your work ready for when you are approached or find someone looking for original stuff. Business is a big step to take and can be stressful to figure it all out, but a "grass-roots" beginning is a good way to get started slowly and not all that much difficult. Hope this might give you some ideas.

Stoy
