New and lurking
Hi guys...a few new folks were coming forth and introducing themselves so I felt kinda guilty just lurking.
Ok...I live in the middle of Missouri but would love to move to Wyoming or Montana. Or maybe even the Carolinas! I know...I know...a little different there. I love the ocean...but I'm also a Western and Equine artist so the draw to the West is powerful as well! ha!
While I work to make a name for myself (which is apparently nearly impossible *sigh* ) I work as an assistant to an advisor on a university campus. Most the time I try to get up 2 hours early in the mornings to work on art before I come to the dungeon (read office here).
Since I'm in the dungeon as I write this, I can't attach anything, but you can go to www.downeyart.com if you are so inclined.
I worked in acrylics and watercolor until 2000. My subject matter back then was very eclectic and included polar bears, tigers, lighthouses, and covered bridges to name a few. Then, I had a tiny little life altering horse accident in 2000 and my life.....my art....hasn't been the same since.
Well...this was WAY more than you wanted to know.
Later,
Vicki

Hi Vicki! Come on in, put yer feet up, prepare yourself to meet the rest of them... *I* am the sane one....it's 'all dem ozzers' who take a bit of getting used to!! I don't do horses, at least not recogniseably, but I admire those who can!

Re: New and lurking
You're one of the best western artists that I have ever seen. Welcome--contribute muchly--we are all anxious to learn.
ps--I ask this of a lot of artist--but would you consider talking a little bit about your technique?

Re: New and lurking
WELCOME to WC and the Drawing/Sketching forum Vicki !!
Had a peek at your web site and I REALLY like your Western art, especially your saddle piece Look forward to seeing MORE of your work soon
PS: Have a peek at my saddle drawing if you like
Side Saddle A graphite and ink drawing.
I also just started on another recently called Saddle and Spurs A graphite drawing.
I'd be very interested in your opinion on these

Welcome, Vicki! Had a look at your website... great stuff. I love 'rustic' subject matter. Can't wait to see what you will post. Soon though, right?

Re: New and lurking
WOW...WOW...WOW! First guys...I'm speechless! Gees...you make me feel so welcome that now I wonder why I have been quiet for so long!
Furthermore, I'm very humbled! Your compliments on my work are just...well...unimaginable! I've seen most your work and you guys are great!
Sure...I have no problems giving input...although I'm not so sure I do it the correct way! hehe. But then...is there really a right and wrong way if the end product is what you are after?
One thing I do that seems to make a lot of difference in how a piece I'm working on turns out..is I make sure I get enough range in the scale. From white to the blackest black there are *many* levels of gray. Sometimes if a piece doesn't grab me I'll realize it's because there's not enough contrast. Also one thing about my work is that I'm one of those "obsessed about detail" folks. It's a curse...really. I can't get nearly as much work done as I'd like.
Ok...guys...I have to scoot right now. There's a 24x36 acrylic painting that I've been putting off for way too long. I'll post more tomorrow and check out the links you all have included here. I do a lot of posting from my 8 to 5 during the week! hehehe
Again....I can't tell you how you guys have made my day! In fact, I believe I'll have a better chance of making progress on the canvas after reading your support!
Vic
