shopping market mural - UPDATED 02.25.05

Hi all! This mural is in an indoor shopping center called Black Water Market in Conway, SC. If you're in the area, please do come and see. The pictures I'm posting today show the mural at its incomplete stage, and I'll post more as the work progresses. Sorry I don't have pics of the very beginning stages.

Part of the mural consists of painted brick-work around the entrances to the stores, and part will be street scenes representing old-timey Conway. Not necessarily exact, but capturing the essence of the old part of town which is being rejuvenated.

Fantastic Ruth ..... everything is looking great. I wish I lived close enough to see this. The seat is so realistic .... nice touch with the newspaper and coins and the cat is lovely.
I just love to see your WIP's ... keep the pics coming

Re: shopping market mural - progress pics

Here's where the mural goes from painted flat brick wall to street scene. Photo skews perspective lines. It's really a convincing corner IRL.

Tree grew some today:

I had my doubts about whether I could do it or not, but it turned out okay...

Re: shopping market mural - progress pics

Thanks for your comments, y'all! Theresa, if you're coming to MB, let me know! Love to meet other WC'ers.

Becky, thank you. I work alone mostly, but I do have a friend who is helping with the b-o-r-i-n-g brick work when she has a day off. She came with me Friday, and I told her she could either do more bricks, or paint sky and treetops. She was excited about painting sky and treetops until she got up on top of the wobbly scaffold. After a while, she said she's happy painting bricks, standing on solid ground.

Re: shopping market mural - progress pics

Ruth, more ???'s:
Did you paint the wall yellow and then the "grout" for the bricks light or visa versa?

The last bricks I painted, I painted the wall greyish, then taped, then did the red-brown multi colored bricks. Time consuming!

Do you teach? May I come live with you for a month? hahahaha
My family wouldn't like that too much! I also work alone except when teaming up with a wonderful plaster artist I share a studio with. She does things I don't......but murals are for me, also a one woman show.

Re: shopping market mural - progress pics

LOL Becky! Yes, I do teach, and you can come live with me if you don't mind sleeping on the floor, washing dishes and dusting

The wall was painted flat yellow by the owner, then I did some sponge-painting to give it a textured look, and the lines were marked and painted on top of all that. I have tried doing it with taping, but you're right, it's a lot of trouble, esp. when the paint seeps under the tape and leaves a blob, or when you peel off the tape and some of the paint comes off with it. At least this way I have a bit more control of it.

Re: shopping market mural - progress pics

Sleeping on the floor would be fine BUT no cleaning......didn't you hear that artists aren't supposed to have to clean? We just paint......until we fall down!

Ruth, the bricks are just beautiful.....they pop out with your trademark shading and shawdows.
Awe inspiring as always.......thank you for sharing!

Re: shopping market mural - progress pics

UPDATE

I can't get the whole street scene in the camera lens, it's about 13' high and 30' wide. These shots had to be taken at an angle, so they're distorted. Sorry. Still a few details to be finished, but I had to go on to the next part to show some progress. More pics coming in a couple of days!

Continuing saga of Wall Without End... this is in a corner. There's a fountain that is covered up with the scaffold in these photos. Just to give an idea of working conditions and how things progress...
