WIP: "Nation Pride" Rodeo Indian
This is my first pastel in almost 2 years, and my 10th pastel. My first 'rodeo' theme pastel. I nearly did this as a watercolor, then decided to do it as a pastel.
It's 3am. I probably started this about 5 hours ago. Not sure. I may work though the night and finish it sometime during the day. So I don't know how much of a WIP you'll get.
This will be my first pastel WIP I have posted on WC!
I hope it works out the way I want. I have some difficult areas ahead of me. I'm not sure how proficient I'll be at capturing them.
Regards,
Jillian

Thank you for your welcome, and vote of confidence in my work.
We shall see how this goes. After a rash of miniature work, I think I need to show that I can do 'big' work, too.

Jillian

Hi Jillian - welcome to the Pastel Forum! Glad you decided to post this WIP - you have an amazing start here - the flag is especially well done. How big is this, what pastels are you using and what paper?

Thank you.
I am using a full sheet of Canson, although it's going to be less by an inch on both left and right, and about 1/4" short on top and bottom I think.
Sorry, I'm a very messy worker.
The pastels I'm using are Sennelier. They are VERY soft.
Something like by 18" by 25" ?????? Does that sound right?
Thanks for your comments.
Regards,
Jillian

I've used Canson before, but haven't used these pastels before.

Hey Jillian!!! So nice to see one of your pastels in progress. This one is coming along fantastic. Settling back to watch it come to life but figure you are probably in need of a snooze by now!!! LOL... looking forward to this and thanks for giving the details of paper etc, always good to know.

Hey there gal! Thanks for looking in!
Thank you for your compliments.
Yeah, I did need to kick back and snooze fro a few hours.
I only ever use Canson. I think I tried pastels about 15 years ago, and used a cheap pastel paper. I hated the way the pastel went on the paper, and couldn't get it to do anything I wanted, so I shelved the idea entirely. Then in 1998 I needed to do a big painting fast and chose to do it in pastels. VERY fortunate decision, as I started painting, the siamese I was doing, came to life under my fingers, and I was hooked - I realised I really COULD be an artist. The 2nd work I did straight after that won an award ... the judge's comments saying how competent I was with this medium - this left me chuckling BIG TIME! I only did 3 more after that, until 2002, and then haven't done any since. This is my first time using these pastels. Previously I used Art Spectrum, which is slightly harder, with much control, good colors, too.
I like these pastels, but it is a learning curve for me, as they are different. I guess not having done a pastel in 2 years doesn't help, either.
I'm bad at noting what materials I use most times, I had to go look at the pastel name and measure the paper when asked. But the paper I knew as it's all I buy.
Hope you're doing great!
Regards,
Jillian

Glad you like it.
I have taken a break. I got to a stage that was difficult.
Just hope all goes well from here on.

Thank you.
What amazes me, is that you can take an image, then not reproduce it faithfully and it still turns out okay, because I altered this quite a lot.
That is why I almost shoot people who say things like 'photo-realism' as my work isn't. I don't have the disipline to copy like that. I take the basics then do my own thing.
I appreciate you looking, and commenting.
Regards,
Jillian
