Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter academic male nude (red chalk)

hi everyone,

This is a six hour drawing I made at our atelier last Sunday. The model is a German dancer and was really amazing. I used 300 pound fadriano watercolour paper and a caran dache watercolour pencil. 16x20
let me know what you think!

Re: academic male nude (red chalk)

very well rendered!

off hand, i might suggest taking a look at the length of the legs, and maybe the size of the feet and head. something about one/some/all of these proportions is making his torso seem a bit on the small size, i think.

otherwise, a great work

Montreal, you are off to a good start with some nice values and forms, however, stazz is correct: the size of the knees and the rest of the legs below are too large to look natural, regardless of what the model looks like. Life drawing classes are great...I wish I could make some time to go. Looking forward to more work from you.

I think you are both right! I just made some changes to the torso, pelvis and the legs - I'll keep working on it - thanks for the comments -

Re: academic male nude (red chalk)

Personally I think this is an awesome rendering, even though I haven’t seen the model. As for the knees and torso I’m really not sure I agree with Starz and Bottoni. To some point I respectfully disagree. Here’s the reason I say this is, I have over the years, discovered the difference in torsos between people. At one time my younger brother and I were the same size. I had trouble with him wearing my jeans. As we got older this became impossible for both of us. We are both 5’9” but his jeans are a 36” length because he has a very short stout torso. On the other hand my jean length is a little over 32”. I have a lot of trouble keeping a shirttail in and try to but shirts with extra long tails because I have a very long torso. He has no trouble keeping his shirttail in at all. Before I made too many changes I would take a second look at my model. Either was I think you really did a great gob. Another thing is most people have a tendency to make legs too short. Great job.

Re: academic male nude (red chalk)

I have a comment about the feet. I find it is the perspective that is making funny optical illusion or making the model float.

If you were drawing the model at the same height as you, you will not see the feet like that. You will see less the top part of the feet. And the angle is less.

If you were drawing the model from 4-5 feet higher plane then you might see the feet like that, but the body will have some foreshortening.

Nice rendering Montreal painter love it.
