English Bulldog - FINISHED

Hi Everyone!

Sorry I've been so scarce these days, I've been working lots of overtime at work and just can't seem to fit everything in I would like to do. I was chatting with Arlene and she wanted me to post this WIP so here it goes. I found this dog, his name is Gulliver, on the web and I just had to draw him. I wrote to the owners and got permission to use their photo as a reference. I also agreed to send them a print when I get them done.

Here's that reference photo all cropped the way I want to draw it:

Here's the first WIP:

This is done on White Stonehenge 14 x 9 inches and this is also just a scan of the middle of the picture there is more drawing on both sides, as I go along I will take digital pics to get the whole drawing in. The background is done with indigo blue, peacock green, dark purple, a light layer of black and another light layer of indigo. When I do animals I use Prisma Color, Polychromos (they have a great choice of browns and tans) and derwent studios (they are great to do fur because they are dryer). In the fur area I started out with a biege or cream depending on what kind of highlight I wanted to achieve. I then layered using different oranges, tans, browns, bronze and sepia. My layers are always done with a light touch and a very sharp pencil.

Re: English Bulldog - WIP

Here's another progress shot:

At this stage I continued to use cream, beige, oranges, tans, browns, bronze and sepia. In the white area I used cloud blue, some french greys, light peach, leaving some of the white paper and then burnished with white. You may not be able to see it in this reference but Gulliver has lots of white hairs showing through on his mussle. I plan on impressing lines on the paper before I add layers, I did a little of that just below his right eye. Another thing you can do is put down one layer of a light color and then impress, that also gives it a nice look.

Re: English Bulldog - WIP

Love that one eye (OK, two eyes) staring at us, Gemma. Look forward to the rest of the WIP. I'm sure it'll be as great as all of your animal portraits.

Re: English Bulldog - WIP

And here is the third WIP:

At this point I just keep layer more of the same, I did add some black grape to give some of the shadow areas a richer look.

What a fantastic pose! He looks like he has had SUCH a hard day. I love watching this WIP. It's so interesting to see how you fully develop one area at a time. Absolutely fascinating.
