Memorial Flower Garden

Title: Memorial Flower Garden
Year Created: 2003
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 18 x 24
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

I started this piece by covering the entire surface with burnt sienna, then painting with lots of strokes. The foreground has some knife work.

Can you give me some input into my use of color and strokeworK ?

Re: Memorial Flower Garden

I like the sky
there is a unified treatment there.
whether there are clouds or not does not matter, it is still reading sky and looking pretty good.
the rest of the painting reads clearly but does not seem nearly as unified.
I would prefer more of a sense of unity like in the sky throughout and less detail or clarity.
fun da mental

Re: Memorial Flower Garden

I think what would benefit this piece
would be to change the colors of
the statue...not so white...more grayed
and the brick pavers...not so red...more dull clay (grayed/neutral orange)

also some variance of greens
mostly to distinguish between distant and forward
sipllifying the composition
(basic rule, distant has more atmosphere/air/vapor between you and it, so in general, depending on the specific atmosphere...more blue added)
(right front is good imho...
nice forward colors and reference to definition)

an overall nice composition
needing some better play of color

keep going...on to the next...
