One Rose, Two Views

Two pictures of the same rose. Both SOOTC, just resized and saved for the web. Which do you think works better? Or do neither work at all
C&C always welcome. (I've been meaning to ask, C&C does stand for cakes and cookies doesn't it? )
Kate.

Re: One Rose, Two Views

Nice shots though the color is rather weak and could be punched up easily in PS. If you're shooting with a digicam SOOTC simply means you've let your camera do the work of color correcting and exposure assuming you're in jpeg mode. The only way to get an unaltered shot just as the digital processor has captured it is to shoot in RAW mode. With RAW you get the largest file your camera can capture and you're totally in control of color, exposure, etc.

Kate,

I like them both, but if I have to choose, it would be #2 as the top edge of #1 is a bit distracting. Also there is more detail on the edges ofthe petals in the center of #2. Thanks for sharing these.

Dave

Kate this is a beautiful rose. I love the color. I think I like the second shot more for the same reasons that Dave mentioned.

Cakes and Cookies indeed.

#2 is the better one. A little tweaking of the Levels, and it will be even more dramatic!

Re: One Rose, Two Views

Thanks for commenting everyone. I think I prefer #2 myself. I did have a play with the colour/levels/curves etc, but everything I did looked wrong somehow, so I left it as it was. Which I thought made it SOOTC, but obviously not.
Thanks again, now...where are my cakes?
Kate.

Re: One Rose, Two Views

Definitely prefer #2, Kate...it's a stunner.
#1 appears slightly over-exposed to me.

Now, as a point of interest, in #2 you appear to have moved slightly closer to your subject. In moving closer, your goodself, your camera, etc. reduces the amount of light reaching the subject and this has possibly given you slightly less exposure which, in turn, would give you greater colour saturation.

Now to the question of SOOTC...... As I have always understood it....SOOTC stands for *Straight Out Of The Camera* and, once again, as I understand it, when used on WC! it indicates that the image has simply been resized to conform to site requirements and nothing more. ie. no cropping, no sharpenning, colour adjustments or anything else.

So, as you say you left everything *as was* - I would say you are perfectly correct to say *SOOTC* so, I say *WELL DONE!*

Two gorgeous photos, Kate and SOOTC in my book as you describe them.

I know everyone is right and #2 is technically the better photo (colour saturation, DOF, etc) but I have to admit I don't find the light source distracting - I actually like the extra bit of sparkle if gives the flower.
