Funny story and what would you have done? Kinda long, but VERY FUNNY!

Every year I get together with some buddies and we head over to the lake for a few days of unwinding. This year, my girlfriend invited me to her house the night before. We met up with her guy friend for dinner at the casino.

When I walked in the door, I saw a poster of Michael Bolton. He was going to be there the next night performing, but alas, I was going to be with my g/f's at the cottage. I'm a Bolton groupie from way back.

So we sit down in the restaurant, the waitress brings our drinks, and in walks Michael Bolton! I started to yell, "There's Michael Bolton", but slapped my hand over my mouth about half way through the word Michael. I changed places at the table so I could eat and watch him. What a hoot. Nooooo, I didn't go talk to him or ask for his autograph. I respected his privacy.

So we leave about 3 hours later, and my girlfriend has to pick up her car from her friends, and I agree to meet her out at her house. She lives a bit out of town, in a nice posh neighborhood, but it's heavily wooded. The night is pitch black, you can't see your hand in front of your face. I pull into the driveway, shut off the engine, and turn on Bolton and try to stay calm. I'm terrified of the dark.

A few minutes later, she pulls in the drive, into the garage. I get out of my vehicle, walk around to get my suitcase, and the garage door closes! I'm in the pitch black again. I think to myself, "Now that was strange". So I walk around to the front door, waiting for lights to come on and her to open the door. Nothing. I ring the bell. Wait. Nothing. I bang on the garage door. Wait. Nothing. I holler her name. Wait. Nothing. Now I'm freaked.

I get back in my vehicle. Sit and think for a second. Then try to call her on my cell phone. No signal. I drive down the street, until I get a signal, call her cell phone, no answer. Call her home. No answer. Drive back by the house, still pitch black. Now I'm really freaked.

So I drive 3 miles to a bar that I know is still open and call 911. The police arrive & meet me out at the house, draw their guns, and sneak up and around the house. I see flashlights shining through the house, and it feels like I'm waiting forever. (Now remember, I just went through an experience with an ex-husband/murder/suicide here, so that's going through my mind). She was divorced about a year ago. A few minutes later, here she comes with the police, down the driveway! I was relieved, and then really mad when I found out she had pulled into the garage, and then fell asleep in the car! Man!

The police left and then I got pretty angry with her. I went to bed. She came in a few minutes later, angry that I would have let her die or whatever and not even break into the house. Then I start feeling guilty. I suggested we just talk about it in the morning. So she closes the door.

It's really hot and stuffy in the room, so I get up and open the window. It had started raining and a nice breeze was blowing in. I finally nodded off after tossing and turning and going over the storry over and over in my head. I figure I fell asleep about 2. All of a sudden I'm awakened by the familiar sound of wings fluttering! A flippin' bat! She had taken the screens off earlier to clean them! The room is FULL of mosquitos and now a hungry bat! I pull the blankets over my head and wait for the fluttering to stop, then run out of the bedroom and slam the door.

My next choice of sleeping is on the very uncomfortable contemporary sofa in her living room. I finally get settled and her cats decide it's time to play with me! That went on for about 5 minutes, and I finally nodded off again.

The sun started to come up about 5:30 so I headed back to the bedroom, closed the window, slapped a few mosquitos, perused the room for bats and crawled back into bed, pulling the blankets over everything but my nose so I could breathe. I left the door open so if there was a bat, the cats would come to my rescue. Soon the cats are up on the bed, playing swat with the mosquitos buzzing about my head!

I'm thinking at this time, that in my 49 years of life, this one has to be the most unrestful and yet eventful moment in my life! I finally nodded back off and woke to my friend bringing me a cup of coffee in bed and a huge apology. She didn't even know what happened after she went to bed!

I knew we'd laugh about it later, which we did, but man.......that was only the first 12 hours!

So, what would you have done? Would you have broken into the house to see what was going on? Or would you have done what I did? I was going to go wake up her neighbor, but she doesn't know them that well, and if there was nothing wrong, I didn't want rumors to be going around. It was just a terrible spot for me to be in.

So, shoot your comments and feedback. My life goes this way quite often. I always find moments to be caught up in.

lol
Hugs,
Chris

Chris, i read this this morming & thought about it a while.I think I would've been so worried I probably would bust in without thinking , finding my friend asleep I would've been so pissed off, I would've b*tch-slapped her to wake her up!
She's lucky you turned around & called the cops!

First of all Im laughing right now because Ive been through similiar crud with unrestful nights at friends places but I really feel for what you went through. My life is the twilight zone.
You did do the correct thing which was to goto a safe place and call the cops. This is what most law enforcement recommends. You should never walk into a situation you feel could be dangerous. Unless you have training for these types of situations (and thats no guarantee) Dont beat yourself up for driving off and calling the cops.
I've had training and I couldnt say for 100% that I would always go in for that type of situation. IF it was my kids or husband hell yes I would be in there in a second. For my friends too, but I rarely go anywhere unarmed, in one way or another and I have other training.
Hopefully you wont have any more things like this happen to you

Oh Chris, what a night. I'm a big scardy and I would have gotten out of there as fast as my car would take me! Don't expect me to run in and rescue you girlfriend! You did the right thing.

Am I the only one thinking that your friend was probably too drunk to drive in the first place? Or just too sleep-deprived to drive, which can be just as bad? No wonder her reactions weren't quite appropriate when she finally woke up.

I've had the bat experience -- but it was TWO bats, and they didn't leave when the sun came up. One tried to hang up in a corner and got one of his claws stuck in the wood paneling -- couldn't get loose -- and the other one got stuck between a window and a screen and squeaked and bared his teeth at us. We got a friend to come over, stand on a ladder, and take the screen off from the outside so the bat could fly out. I can't remember how he got the other bat loose from the paneling.

I would have done the same thing you did. The way the story was going I thought she was inside the house with Michael Bolton hiding from you. Ha!

I'm with Emily.....she didn't "go to sleep", she passed out momentarily from drinking and probably was in no condition to be driving anyway. Either that or your friend has narcolepsy and REALLY shouldn't be driving!

Darn, I was waiting for the surprise appearance of Michael Bolton.

I've read too many romance novels I guess. Glad everyone is OK tho. That's what's important.

You absoultely did the exact right thing. In fact, I'm surprised you were able to think so clearly with everything that must have been going through your mind. Good for you!

Re: Funny story and what would you have done? Kinda long, but VERY FUNNY!

You did absolutely the right thing...IF there had been someone in there harming her, his harming you also, would not have saved her, BUT then noone would have been able to get the police and I don't even want to think about what could have happened to the two of you out there secluded, for possibly hours on end....YOU DID THE ONLY RIGHT THING TO DO!!!! I have got to agree with the fact that it sounds like she should NOT have been driving...I think there were some angels watching over you two that night, that only a restless night, a little anger and some close encounter with a bat, mosquitoes and cats were the negative outcomes of that night. I am so glad you were able to laugh about it later...God Bless - Virginia

Hmm...one of the first things I asked Chris when on the phone with her a couple days....how much she have to drink.....Chris said they were in the restaurant for 3 hours together during which time she saw her have 2 drinks, one mixed and a glass of wine. Surely not even enough to put you over the .08 legal limit in our state. The friend did admit she was exhausted that night. Chris said the driveway was not your average one and the gal didn't notice her car when she pulled into the garage. I forgot to ask if she is a blond!
