Henk's Bobo!

I wanted to paint some dogs so I asked Henk if I could paint one of his dogs. He was nice and sent me several reference shots of his pooches. He also said that he would like it if I painted his wife's beloved and highly missed Dachshund by the name of Bobo. I really liked the challenging background so I opted to to include it. I will make changes to Bobo himself using all of the ref's Henk sent me in order to capture Bobo's likeness a little better.

This piece is on 16 x 20 canvas. I'm using ComArt and Golden Transparent pre-mixed airbrush colors. I'm using my newly acquired Olympos HP-100B (I love it!) and my Olympos SP-A.
So far this has been freehand airbrushed. The main subject is masked with drafting film. I won't include any details so if you have any questions, please ask!!!!!

Hi Sam, great to see another WIP started. You're a busy guy. Just wondering, do you pretty much use onlytranparents when you paint?

Re: Henk's Bobo!

It's not on purpose Penster! LOL!

Henk, I'm about done with the background, for now. I will be starting on Bobo soon!

Kevin, I almost exclusively use transparent, although lately I have been trying out some of the opaque paints. I have three to four paintings going at the same time! When I get tired of one, I set it aside and work on another! It's not that I'n so busy, I just have plenty of time to paint!

Donna, thanks! You are just the best! I'm currently working on a painting just for you! It's on Clayboard! I don't know how it's going to turn out, so I'm not posting it yet! Soon, I hope! I just absolutely love your self portrait on your website!

Re: Henk's Bobo!

Here are some more updates!

I think I'm ready to start on Bobo now. The background can use some tweaking and the stump that Bobo is sitting on, needs a lot of work. I can do this as I go along.

Re: Henk's Bobo!

I'm really loving the background Sam. I see you were up to a challenge on this one, it's quite detailed. Can't wait till you make Bobo pop off the page

How 'bout a few words on your creation of the background as it looks so far.

Re: Henk's Bobo!

I have started on Bobo's fur, the first photo shows a quick underpainting before I start the fur. The second shows detail of his feets. And the third shows how my first step is establishing the direction of fur flow. This step tells me where I will start working up the fur, since I start from the farthest layers and work forward.

Re: Henk's Bobo!

Sam
Tell me about your drafting film you use.
I just got back from the art store and had nothing like it.
They showed me every pad of velum they had.
It's a mylar right? is it a pad or a roll? Who makes it?
what thicknesses does it come in?

Thanks
Joe

Re: Henk's Bobo!

Joe, I buy my drafting film from a local art supply. It is sold in rolls or they cut it into pre measured lengths. I asked once and they said it's purchased from Art Grafix.

I call it single sided frosted drafting film. One side is "frosted" in order to accept pencil and ink. I like this attribute because it allows me to lay the film over the artwork and trace with high accuracy.

I think it's true name is mylar matte acetate. It comes in .003, .005, and .009. You can buy it in sheets or in rolls. I like the rolls. They can be expensive but they will last forever! I never throw any of it away until I use every square millimeter of it! LOL!!

Here is just one link: http://www.dickblick.com/zz555/08/pr...m=0&ig_id=1605

Hope that helps Joe!

Re: Henk's Bobo!

Sam,

Really enjoy seeing the process of Henk's Bobo (cute dog Henk!). I have used the acetate in clear rolls but haven't seen seen the matte rolls there. You're right, they do last a long time.

I guess you airbrushed the fur w/dagger strokes? Or is that brush?
