Silly Question

Okay--I really want to get out there and do some plein aire; I've done it a little, but not much at all. I have a silly question: How do you pronunce "plein aire"? I've heard it pronounced "pleen" (rhymes with clean or seen).

It's not SUCH a silly question. I took Spanish in High School but the way I've heard it is ( phoenetically) "on plen air" ( en plein aire ).

Re: Silly Question

I took Norwegian in grade school...doesn't help a bit. From what I've heard, Lee is right, it's 'on plen (as in fen )-air' with the emphasis on.... plen'air.

Re: Silly Question

Speaking of phonetics, I have a question, why isn't it "phonetics" pronounced the way that it's spelled?

Re: Silly Question

My friend who lives in France pronounces it plen (like plin) air. I have to laugh because most of the southern folks I know call it plane air with a long a. It cracks me up. Even though I'm a southerner through and through, I prefer to call it the way the French do, plin air.
Love,
Linda

Re: Silly Question

Lee is right on target. I must add that "aire" with an "e" is a mistake however. Everytime I click on the "en plein aire" link I kinda twitch . It should be called "plein air".
Also "Plein air" means: outside as in the great outdoors.

Hi Giselle, Can you possibly give me a French word for the rather large
pot ( I don't like the sound of urn) in my posting "MAY BOUQUETS"...it always sounds better in French.

Re: Silly Question

Main Entry: plein air
Pronunciation: "plAn-'ar, -'er; ple-'nar, -'ner
Function: adjective
Etymology: French, open air
Date: 1894
1 : of or relating to painting in outdoor daylight
2 : of or relating to a branch of impressionism that attempts to represent outdoor light and air
- pleinˇairˇism /plA-'nar-"i-z&m, ple-, -'ner-/ noun
- pleinˇairˇist /-ist/ noun

According to AOL's audio pronunciation guide, it sounds like plane air. Maybe they are Southern and not French? I think I am going with the "paintin outside!" Lorijo
